Insuring your bump

Post by Tycho »

Hey all,

I'm taking my ride out of the storage phase and into driving it again. Before I call around, how is everyone here insuring their ride?

Collectors or regular?
(how old are you and what are you paying)

What did you have to do to pass emissions in your state?

Looking to get around having the truck sniffer/visual tested here in AZ and can apparently do that with collectors insurance but not sure if I or the truck qualify.

Insurance varies greatly from state to state so it is very difficult for anyone outside of your state to give you firm answers.

If you have another vehicle insured, I would start with your agent on that, otherwise you would be best to sit down with an agent and discuss your options. I personally would try to deal with an exclusive agent (one who works only for one company) as they will know the companies policy better and can probably bind coverage (make sure they bind coverage if you are planning on driving it, it should be something signed by the agent that says "Binder" or "coverage bound") if coverage is not bound you could be left without coverage if the policy isn't issued. Be honest with the agent and on the application, if not the policy could be rescinded even after a loss.

Generally, collectors insurance requires a professional appraisal and has other restrictions such as no back and forth to work, garaged and limited miles per year. Most are also "agreed value" which is why an appraisal is required and while it will enable you to collect the agreed value in the event of a total loss, it will also allow the company to collect a premium commiserate with the actual value. Be careful of stated value policies that are not agreed value as that only allows the company to collect premium based on the stated value but you would still have to support the value in the event of a loss. Again generally if there is no appraisal it is not an agreed value policy.

HTH

Again, your state laws could greatly impact that, but that is how it typically works...

for collector insurance you must have daily driver insurance on something else. and the truck must be valued high. as well as you may be limited on miles the truck is dirven.

As DuckRyder said insurance varies from state. My 72 has collecter's insurance thru Hagerty Insurance. I'm limited to 5000 miles per year, it must be garaged, you must have another vehicle with proper insurance and registration, minimum age of 25, minimum of 4 years as a licensed driver with no accidents or serious traffic violations within that 4 year span. Full coverage with liability ( I opted for double my state minimums ), collision, fire, theft, glass, towing within a 10 mile radius and an agreed upon value of 10k costs me $182 per year with a $500 deductable. The deductable does not apply to towing. While this may not work for you it suits me fine. I can drive it to work occasionally but can't use it for any commercial purpose.

The emissions issue isn't a problem for me since anything 77 or older is exempt in Pennsylvania. I have mine registered as an antique so it's also exempt from the safety inspection.

That's insane. I pay that on a V6 Camry, although its for state minimum (no replacement or anything) and I do have an accident on my record.

I have a daily driver, truck cannot be garaged since it's too big. I'm looking for a low mileage minimum coverage type deal so I can move it between shops legally and perhaps occasionally take it out in the dirt.

I'm 21, what company was that through and what kind of coverage? I only want liability. Not the hardest truck in the world to steal and also not the most valuable.

Also talk tyo your agent, sometimes you even get full coverage on a second vehicle for almost nothing compared to what you allready pay for your daily driver if it's fully covered.

Sometimes not but liability is atleast discounted on the second car when they quote you. this depends on state and your age and accidents/moving/vehicle violations. when i quote my cougar i pay 80 a month for liability, double the state min with 5k med coverage, uninsured and under insured matching the liability. plus towing coverage giving me upto 10 miles 2x a year free the rest i pay half. and the truck is listed on the policy as $25 more per coverage per 6 months wth the cougar being about 480-490 per 6 months.

i'm 29 and have nothing not even a speeding or faulty equip on my record. and no accidents ever knock on wood rap rap. this is through Gico, God Bless the Gecko, cuase when i was towing, regardless the service he paiud 40.00 base plus whatever else was needed within reason.

I haven't insured my highboy yet but I had my 70 F100 before I got rid of it inshured through American Family. When I turned 16 I got a quote for my own liabilty policy driving the 70 just to school and back and it was $160 a month but my parents just added it onto there policy so I'm not shure on the cost but I do know with my moms 05 Mustang dads 00 Ranger my 95 F150 and 69 Highboy it $150 a month and I've had two tickets. So I don't think thease old rigs are a whole lot to inshure. Also we don't have emissons here in Missouri..........yet and I hope we don't get them cause there's no way my 95 or Highboy would pass

I talked to them and Hagerty at the same time. Seemed like a good outfit. Quotes were within a few bucks. Hagerty got it cause my dad, brother and several friends also have Hagerty insuring their stuff.
