I think i am getting an eduacation or a new one ripped 4 me

Post by rjewkes »

Decided that on acount of how tiny a cramped space it is under the cougars hood and my lack of a shop or even a cement driveway, i'd let a shop fix my p/s ad oil dipstick tube that broke off flush in the oil pan.

all was fine when i was quoted $350.00 Parts and labor. Then when i called him and told him i was ready to get it done. suddenly i have to pick up the 80.00 part. And i was fine with that as long as it meant the cost at the shop went down, since i had allready spent 80.00 of it. even if you minus the 25.00 core from that it still leaves 55.00 off his end right? he says i'll still owe him $350.00 so now i wonder do i get the courtesy of 2 power steering pumps?

 :x

Am i right am i getting the short end here? or is this SOP?

the ford shop charges 55.00 and hour here with a 2 hour minimun. i know i could have done that work in my gravel driveway for that kind of money though.

I'm starting to think this is why i prefer the earlier stuff. and i coulda doe the ps i'm sure. but it looked like the engine woulda had to be lifted a little to get at the oil dipstick.

If they told you $350 for parts and labor then they buy the parts, if they cant buy the parts then you should take you ride somewhere else to get it worked on. Did you ask him when he asked you to buy the pump by if he was doing the work for $270 ?

Nope i didn't think to ask, it just made since in my head that i would drop the price by what the part cost.

By law (in Califorina) they have to fill out a repair order that you must sign ok-ing the estimated amount prior to working on the vehicle. Any increase beyond the estimated must be ok'd and initialed by the customer.

I wouldn't deal with a shop that didn't supply it's own parts, if only because if they screw the job up they're gonna claim it was your part and not their mistake.

This happens all the time. Yesterday I had to referee a fight in the bay of the garage in front of me. I kept hearing shouting and cussin so I went up to get a ringside seat and found the Honduran shop owner about to crack some black guy in the head with a piece of conduit. Seems the black guy had bought a pair of rotors and wanted them installed. This didn't fix his problem though because it was his calipers that needed replacing. He thought the mechanic should have known this and the mechanics point was that he did what the customer asked. It was funny. It had all the basic cliche's like "why you disrespectin me" and "don't make me go to my trunk !"

Give me the $270 and I'll do it. Just don't make me go to my trunk:)

exactly leave it to the experts to get the right parts and determine what you need fo ryour car or truck. dont just start buying parts and replacing them . you dont need a new enigne to fix a flat tire.

Seems like if you have to take things to the shp, then you need to go where you know thier gonna get extra outa you, instead of going for the guy who looks decent enough. now that i think of it, shouldn't trust a shop that works on all the buy here pay here lot's cars.

I have not taken a car under my car to a dealer or mechanic in about 25 years. If I don't know how to fix it I get on the internet, join the websites for the car I am working on and figure out how to fix it. I have done timing chain swaps on 2002 Vetic Engines from a Focus, 96 3.8 engine swaps, 3800 Buick upper/lower intake changes and a 2007 Mustang gas tank swap just in the last year or two.
There is so much information out there on the web a person can figure out how to do about anything. I DO have a shop though and I know that makes a world of difference. I did do several engine and head gasket swaps back when I still worked on a gravel driveway. It sure makes work hard.
