are men fading away ,,,, the american male
in the past men would have their wife next to them , kids in the back, man in charge, everyone shut up im driving, ready for the trip , while the wife makes lunch for everyone .
now days, i see guys in pretty delicate sport cars, men with a remote that opens trunk, door and gas door while combing his his in the mirror , . the guy in a fancy new truck, ususally a 98lbs blond just looking at her self in lifted 5 feet truck for city driving. and sometimes i see men in the passenger seat tending to a baby while the wife drives.
maybe im old fashioned. maybe in 50 years you will see more men stay at home moms

Re: are men fading away ,,,, the american male
Times are changing. Spouses share more responsibilities at home as more women are needed in the work force. Living on one salary is no longer an option for many couples. I think taking care of children should be a task taken on by both parents. My dad was never home, so I have chosen a job that allows me to be home for my son more often. I think it is pretty important to spend time with your children to make sure they are being raised with your values, rather than someone else's.
I think fewer people NEED a truck anymore. Many people have them, but drive them like they would a car. Many people hire work done instead of donig it themselves. The reason I bought a truck is becasue I need one to haul stuff for animals, projects, etc. My primary driver is a really comfortable car that gets good gas milage and has all the bells and whistles.
I thought when I was younger that I would never want a vehicle that I couldn't work on and had all the creature comforts, but I soon realized that the benefits of these vehicles outweigh the costs. You can't get a simple car anymore due to the safety standards, that's why you get an old bump and fix it up. It gives you the feeling of the old days.
Men are still men, things are just changing. Roles are changing and the benefit is that men are getting more leisure time as opposed to men 50 years ago. I don't imagine I would like it very much if I were put into the lifestyle that my grandfather had. I can appreciate things as they are now, even if I do have to change a diaper now and then.

Where have the men gone? It's because they don't print instructions for women like this anymore!

Are men an endangered species?
Not as long as there's anything that needs fixed. And a roll of duct tape handy!

To be a success in life you need three things:
1. Imagination
2. Determination
3. And neighbors who mind their own business.

Man, I sure wish this were true in my case! God Bless their souls...I know my both my grandfather's worked very hard all their life.Roles are changing and the benefit is that men are getting more leisure time as opposed to men 50 years ago.
I'd sure like to see the "more time off" thing for awhile.
I saw a female maintenance worker in WalMart yesterday! That's my job (but with a lot more tech involved than just tightening door hinges!

Re: are men fading away ,,,, the american male
From what I read, women are no happier than they were back in 1955. Especially the skanks on Sex and the City. Seems breaking into the boys clubhouse didn't live up to the hype for a lot of women who now wish they'd done things differently.
And speaking of hype, you have to be careful not to confuse what is being put forth by pop culture media and junk scholarship with what is actual reality. The only people who take feminism seriously these days are mentally unstable university profs and coeds looking for some easy credits, celebrities, politicians, harrassment lawyers, guys looking for an "in" and ugly chicks. For most normal women it was an era, not an ideology or way of life. Women who contantly refer to themselves as "independent, strong willed feminists" ect. rarely are. Real women don't need to advertise. They just are. A huge chunk of the reason so many self described feminists have such an irrational, seething hatred for Sarah Palin is because she's their "missing link" She isn't supposed to exist because the sacred scrolls say a successful, powerful woman who also has 5 children cannot exist....at least without an entire federal bureauacracy to help. You don't have to be a fan of Palin to recognize that there's something seriously dysfunctional about the level of hatered some have for her.
As for men, yeah, there has been a concerted effort, culturally, to diminish the traditional image of men over the past 20 or so years. This is the toxic backwash of the worst of the Boomer generation...the old hippies who still cling bitterly (heh) to the crusades of their youth and have spent the last few decades hiding out in the nations universities teaching the next generation of idiots to be likewise unemployable in the grownup world. They want so desperately to find justification of their causes and prove their claims to relevance, that they'll frame lacrosse players for rape. I have a friend who is a big wig at the Martin Agency, the ad firm that gave us the Geico Caveman and lizard, who told me flat out that fresh college grads are taught that you never put a women in a negative light in a commercial where a man is involved. There's an entire hierarchy that follows PC race and genders requirements (hence cavemen and lizards...no demo to offend). And guess who always ends up being portrayed as the clueless buffoon? I don't need to say.
Clueless husband:"Duhh...geee honey (drinks beer) I don wanna do no handywork"
Perky, take charge wife:"That's ok, because I'll just go to Lowe's, by some power tools and do it myself...useless husband be damned!"
So, while normal people go about their daily lives making decisions on who will work and who will raise the kids ect, based on practicallity, there's an entire quasi ideologically based pop culture out that driving the public perceptions that reflect more the fantasy world of pop media than the real world where the broad mass of us live.
Take heart though. Post modern feminism and intellectuallism is already becoming a parody of itself. It's been said that all movements go to far and this one passed it's prime point back around 1996.

There's a great book I have called "A Stiff Drink and Close Shave; The Art of Being a Man". It is all about the old days and what was the highlights of society back then. It has great pictures of the advertising and such from back then too (I am a graphic designer; I mean an Old School graphic designer).
The 90s were the apex of PCism, I am glad people got fed up with it and stopped playing along. That is part of what ruined the definition of MAN.

Also another reason for men dying off the inventors of playstaion, xbox, ipod, and texting is killing the willingness to go and strive for your own future I dont mind moderation but dont sit and do that all day long, the future seems to struggle with that!

There, is one of the most ridiculous things I've seen with how we treat the young kids these days. Who made it OK to give every one a trophy, have every one make the team or not call loosing loosing?pay the consequences, played football, soccer, baseball, hockey, volleyball, learned losing sucks, learned that I wasn't picked for certain teams because I wasn't that good,
At some point in these kids lives, they will loose at something, then what? How do you handle it when you have no experience?
I can understand wanting to protect your child, it's natural, but to give them a false sense of reality? How does that protect or help?
You don't get picked because you aren't good enough, it forces you to find out what you are good at.
Wow, it's easy to get fired up about this.
Sometimes the mind, for reasons we don't necessarily understand, just decides to go to the store for a quart of milk.

Re: are men fading away ,,,, the american male
This reminds me of a realization I had a while back. Like most people, I'm of 2 minds on the subject of illegal immigration. My rational side wants order and respect for the law, but still, I admire most of the hispanics that come here. I never understood why until one day I was in front of the house yakking with a female neighbor when Filipe', my mexican illegal neighbor and amigo came up the road with his 3 year old son Luis sitting on his lap, pretend steering. My female neighbor about had a stroke before going off on a rant about how irresponsible he was and that social services should be called ect, ect. When she finished she looked at me waiting for a confirmation of her outrage but, all I could say was "I dunno...my dad did the same thing with me and even let me drive the car in front of the house when I was 9...alone...and he was a cop!" And I remember it being a big deal for me...that my dad would trust me with something normally reserved for grownups. It's one of the many reasons that, while we had our differences, I would always respect him and seek to earn his respect in return.
At any rate, it was at that moment that it dawned on me why I just couldn't gin up a lot of resentment for the illegals. It's because they're the people we used to be before we became such domesticated house pets.
