Campers! Let´s see ´em!

Post by Florian »

Hey!

Thought it would be a cool idea to start a thread with pictures of bumps that go camping! I´m toying around with the idea of building a camper shell for my F100, but am not sure because of the low GVW it has...

Here are some pictures I collected here or on the internet:

So let´s see what you´ve got!

My favorite subject! :D :woohoo:

Last December I took a road trip to Spokane and picked up this 5th wheel.
I installed a "ball in bed" gooseneck coupler, so I still have use of the bed on a daily basis.
This picture is an overnight stop on the way back home, at an Indian Casino RV park in Southern Oregon.
I was a running just ahead of the first big snow storm of the season.

Wow! That is a BIG trailer you´ve got there

Is it difficult to drive around with a such a long trailer behind you?

Of course! :D

I plan on building my own camper shell from scratch out of aluminium now. Don´t have enough load capacity for something bigger, but it´ll be alright I guess.

Mine before I sent the camper to the big campground in the sky to make a long bed pickup.

It drives real easy, due to the "5th wheel" / Gooseneck configuration. It makes the rider smoother too.
It's a huge wind block though, so with the tired old engine, we don't get anywhere in a hurry.
I normally travel slightly slower than the big rigs, so I can relax while driving.

I saw a '71 F350 pulling a gooseneck horse trailer the other day, so these old beasts still get worked hard. :)

I know they are not bumps. The wagon is mine. The bike camper belongs to some other lucky fellow.

Both mine have camper shells. For actual camping, I like the one on the 74 better than the one
on the 68, but either will do in a pinch. But the one on the 74 is a bit roomier and the windows
are better. I can have the windows open on the 74 and rain won't get in the truck with the downward
slope of the window panes. But you leave the side window open on the 68, rain will pour right on in.
But it's ok if not raining. I have a set of small 12v fans that I can stick in the front camper sliding
window on the 68 for better ventilation. On the 74, that is totally open, and you can crawl into
the camper from the cab. Can't do that on the 68 as I still have the stock window in the back of the
cab, and I don't know if the sliding window on the shell is large enough to crawl through. It would be
tight. Also, the camper on the 74 has sliding rear windows on the back.
That camper really does have a good bit better air flow than the one on the 68, and I would use the 74
if I was going to camp in the summer.
One thing that is not too bad about the 68, is you can store a lot of stuff in the utility bed cabinets,
and leave more room in the bed. With the 74, all the stuff is inside the camper.
I wish I had a little pop up, or maybe an old silver bullet or something.. I could use it up in Oklahoma.
But.. I'd probably drag it up there, and just leave it parked so I wouldn't have to drag it back and forth.

Dunno. Seems a glass shell should be fairly light if the frame is hollow aluminum tube.
Both of mine are aluminum skinned. The one on the 74 is pretty heavy as it's wood framed.
The one on the 68 is a good bit lighter. Aluminum frame and skin. But even that one you
can feel the difference from no shell, to shell added.
With the 68, it's heavy just due to the utility bed. I bet if that bed were gone, and no
camper, my 68 would run like a scalded house cat compared to with all the weight..
Probably jump 4 mpg too..
