What engine are worth saving from crusher

Post by 1982 flareside »

I was wondering like what engines are worth saving. Like a 390. I would like to know rarer engines.

Just Ford or the big 3 in general?

Two that pop in my mind right off are the GM 348's & 409's. Hard to find.

I would be looking for 429 Fords, 351C's & any FE from 410ci & up.

Chryslers would be 273 commando & 340's for small blocks. Big Chrysler 383's 440's.

They aint makin' anymore of the listed engines, but you cant save em' all.

Ok, I'll bite. any V8 built prior to '73 is worth saving and most newer than '90.

My personal bias, any flathead. V-8, I-8, or I-6.
ANY OHV I-8 Buick. Those babies are damn rare, and getting rarer all the time.
I-8 Chryslers are fairly rare also.

I'm a real sucker for the old iron. The older the better. There is something about a 21 stud, flatty Ford that brings a tear to my eye.

I do like the early Hemi's. DeSoto's and Mopar's....331, Commando 354, Fire Tower 392. Those beasts are really one of a kind.

Fordman is right. All heart strings aside, if you have no market to sell them or use them. They are not doing anyone any good.

Really as time goes on they all will become rare. but since nowadays guys are yanking out originals to put in newer engines.

I didnt know the straight 8 buicks were really rare. My grampa has a 39 buick super 8!

4v clevlands
its probaly just a matter of opinion for people. I wouldn't mess with 302's or 351m 400's unless you had them sold

You can sell any running v8 before '73 for more than you would get at a crusher right now.

Like Fordman said nothing is worth saving without a use for it. I've sent a lot of really neat stuff to be soup cans after giving ample opportunity to anyone looking to save it. I've sent good running rust free bumpsides to the shredder even after advertizing them on this website for months at less than scrap value.

It's funny how the world works. I only spend my hard earned money on things I know I can see a return on. If I ran across a Boss 302, 410, 427 or 428 I would pick it up if less than a couple hundred. The reality is what's a beat, broken old core worth? $2000 at the most if a guy's looking for that exact casting number? More like $500, maybe a bit more. So you haul it home, put it for sale, answer a hundred calls on it and deal with deadbeats and flakes for a month before it sells for $800. Subtract your fuel, your phone bill overages, add a frustration value and pay yourself $8/hr for the time. You made $50 for all that hassle.
