Post by 1982 flareside »

I was looking for a dummy knob for my steering wheel. I really need one because maunel steering is really hard to steer.

Around here they're called suicide knobs and ,yes, they are illegal. Your state may vary.

Not that anyone would notice though.

Autozone sells them: http://www.autozone.com/autozone/access ... b/_/N-2663

I've also seen them at Tractor Supply Company but I believe someone already said that. They are illegal in NC as well, not really sure what is so bad about them :?, if anything they are probably a good thing especially if you are like one of us and have arm-strong steering . Anyone know why they are illegal? I'm kind of curious as to what would make them illegal :hmm:.

***Edit: I guess if you got in a wreck in an older truck like ours with no air bags a suicide knob could be a bad thing when you go forward into the steering wheel in a crash .

You can also get them at Lowes. Bought one for my lawn mower there. I think they might be outlawed because you could get hung up on it when making a sudden steering change. Only reason I could think of. I don't think it will help much with manual steering though if you think about it. You need two hands on the wheel, one on each side to turn when parking or making slow turns, at least I did back when I had it. I would think it would be rough on the column bearings also putting all of the pressure on one side like that but I might be thinking all wrong.
I would like it with power steering and might just get me one after reading this thread. Thought about it a couple times just never jumped on it. It would be great for parking with a power steering truck. It would be good for driving on the highway in a manual truck I would think.
I have noticed on the lawn mower how when going slow and turning sharp I still need both hands to turn pretty quickly which is what I am basing my comments on. They are only about $13 so why not try it anyway right. lol

In the big truck circle they are called spinner knobs and I agree with cdeal28078. I don't think they would be a good idea on a manual steering truck for the same reasons stated above. That is just my :2cents:

I heard them referred to as" necker knobs"
Because before power steering if you wanted to have your arm around your date,
they made it easier to steer with one hand.

If I had one on my truck, it would hit me in the belly every time it came around...
