one armed man

i was finshing stripping parts from the 73 4wd at the junkyard today and a one armed man came up to me and asked if the junkyard pulled parts for people. and i said i didnt think so. so i went over to help him myself. it was only a couple of cars away. anyway i couldnt break loose the bolts. they were just too tight and no room to really work. so i went to look for a pipe. to put on the wrench. i couldn't find one large enough to go over his wrench. so we jacked up the other side of the car to get under it better. i threw a car rim under the axle so it wouldn't fall. he then went to his car and got a hammer to pound on the wrench. i wanted so bad to just do it all for him. but i didnt want him to think i was helping him because he only had one arm. instead i mainly let him do everything. i really didnt help him. i just was there for his encouragement. i think. was that the right thing to do? i really didnt want to help. or stand there. because i was busy. i didnt get done . but he did get it off by himself. with just a few words from me and the rim under the axle is all i did for him. i was unsure how i should have helped him. do it all for him or just be there for his support.

You gave him all the help he wanted IMO, He probally just need a hand for a second to get him going and would probally do anything that someone with two arms would do. Ive tryed to help people with one arm before that didnt ask for it and they seem to want to do everything that everybody else dose and if you try to help them theyll let you know quick that they can do it and not really wanting anyones help or pitty, They just want a normal life too.

truthfully i felt i should have went ahead and just finished it for him. i think he would have been alright with it. i actually feel bad that i didnt help him more now.

When I encounter someone like that I just ask them what if any help I can do for them. Usually they have had it both ways and will be honest with you. Some people go over board trying to help and some wouldn't help their own mother.
I think you did fine by him.
