Sick of being Scorned
I get a lot of nice complements about my bump most of the time(ie. neat old truck, used to have one, etc...) but sometimes bump haters seem to find me.
Most of the time I get 'scorned' when I start my bump up after it has sat for like a week or more. For the first few minutes after starting it up, it blows a good bit of smoke out the tailpipe. I plan on rebuilding the old 360 V8 one day, I just don't have the time or money right now BUT almost no one knows that. So, when I'm trying to get out of the 'dense' area so I can burn off what oil has leaked down into the cylinders since I last ran the truck, I get all sorts of mean looks. This afternoon, I started the truck for the first time in about a week and took it for a drive. I don't like to pollute and stuff but I can't help my truck right now, it smokes for a few minutes until the engine has burned off the excess oil. About a mile from my place, I have to come to stop light and I can see all these mad looking drivers shaking their fists and stuff like that. Last year, I was pulled over by the police at the same intersection when my truck smoked pretty bad. I told the cop I had just changed the oil and had accidentality put a little too much but i was going to burn it off. That was truth and he let me go thankfully. I was glad there wasn't a cop in sight today(no offense to police but our city is run by green freaks that hate smoke and stuff). When people tell me my truck isn't "green", I say: "You must be color-blind, it's Winter Green: a common color used by Ford in the 1970s".
I hate to make a bad name for our type of trucks and hope that my own truck doesn't lead to some ridiculous law in my area that would keep me from taking it on the road. Does anyone else ever have this type of problem? Any ideas?
Sorry to rant, but there are too many ignorant people out there that just don't understand or appreciate old trucks like ours.

Re: Sick of being Scorned
How bad is it smoking? It cant be as bad as a bombed out diesel. I see them all over & nobody b*tches about them.
The part where you said:
When people tell me my truck isn't "green", I say: "You must be color-blind, it's Winter Green: a common color used by Ford in the 1970s". Dude, I like to fell outta my chair. Needless to say, I was LMAO.
When someone gives you crap, remind them of what Burt Reynolds asked Jackie Gleeson in "Smokey & the Bandit" : Do the letters FO mean anything to you?

Try replacing the valve stem seals .
they're rather affordable and they help prevent start up smoke.

That's what I'm gonna do(sometime in the near future) before I overhaul the whole engine(long term goal). Thanks.cep62 wrote:Try replacing the valve stem seals .

i would be revving the engine blasting their prius with oil and black **** and saying i couldn't hear them.
thats what i used to do to all the little ricer cars at school. they would be showing off to their friends so i would go start the truck and revv it next to their car and cover the side of their car in black water hahaha

Sadly by there own "green" Standards, Old cars and trucks even when they smoke, have a smaller foot print just becuase it has allready been built, and when it was built brand new the plant building the battery, didn't cuase a ton of acid rain that killed off all veg and animal life likie those hybrids do so they can stuff the not green remark.

Re: Sick of being Scorned
Really? your cops seriously care about that that much?
My friends and I love using seafoam through the carb or vacuum line. We smoke the town up and get lots of weird looks
Actually don't even get me started on this , I wrote a massive report on this for school and quieted lots of "environmentalists" . While at the same time garnering some respect for older cars. That was a fun report.

Also to what rjewkes said , when our stuff was built the plants had a cleaner production standards then lots of the factories today in third world countries.rjewkes wrote:Sadly by there own "green" Standards, Old cars and trucks even when they smoke, have a smaller foot print just becuase it has allready been built, and when it was built brand new the plant building the battery, didn't cuase a ton of acid rain that killed off all veg and animal life likie those hybrids do so they can stuff the not green remark.

Re: Sick of being Scorned
Smokin' hmmmmm......
When I was a lot younger (like back in the 70's) I had a 57 Willy's with the F head four. It had vacuum wipers, drivers side only passenger was manual, anyhow, I kept a 6oz. bottle of diesel fuel beside the seat. Stop at a red light in traffic, take the cap off the diesel and remove the vacuum line from the wipers, gun the motor and let off the pedal as I stuck the vacuum line in the fuel. It would suck it up as fast as you could put it in and smoke..... dude, smoke so much you couldn't see your wiper blades.
It's not something you want to do often cause you give your internal parts a diesel wash and it would almost kill the motor.
I called it my James Bond Jeep.

Athens, Georgia(university town). There's a concentration of green freaks here unfortunately.OldRedFord wrote:What part of GA if you dont mind me asking?
I feel like putting a sign on the back window of the cab saying "if you don't like the smoke, I'm taking donations($) for a new/rebuilt engine."
I know bumps are actually "greener" than modern cars & trucks, it's just the stupid statements made to me by ignorant people that get annoying.
