OT : checking the oven
ok guys i need to vent on this one. so my mom asked me and the wife to watch her house while she goeson her trip to Europe. so my wife decided that shewanted to bake some cookies. so logically i figure she would check the oven before turning it on. knowing my mom i know she stores cake pans with the cover in the oven. so my wife runs up stairs to where i am working and says i need you to come here when i get down stairs and the [censored] is filled with smoke. she had melted the top of the cake panand the plastic is melted allover the over and the house smells like burnt plastic.
here is my question: how many of you would check the oven before turning it on.

Re: OT : checking the oven
women do store stuff in the oven why becasue they dont want to clean it or woudl rather pile it on the counter when they use the oven. my wife does store stuff in the oven. and once i turned on the oven without looking. but i caught it before it was too late. ever since then i do look so i can throw the stuff in the sink where it belongs.

Well, I'm the cook in my house and I ALWAYS check the oven before turning it on, simply because some things are easier stored in the oven as opposed to taking up valuable cupboard space.

I always check, everytime. We have a 4 year old that loves to hide things, & even tho she knows better than to even touch the stove without me or the wife around, better safe than sorry.
Yes, I always check.
The only way to get that smell out of a home is to open every window in the house & let it air out. Melted plastic can be a real PITA to clean up.

I'm pretty sure melted plastic is a very bad smell and poisonous to be breathing in.

Re: OT : checking the oven
Whe I rarely turn our oven on, I never check it. Since I don't use it or anything else in the [censored]. Besides, my wife would never use it for storage. Somehow, even with me and my GRANDdaughter around, she's a neat freak. EVERYTHING has to be in it's place. She even puts me in my place once in a while. ![Laughing ](./images/smilies/icon_laughing01.gif)

Re: OT : checking the oven
O.K. remember you asked...
I wouldn't check it because it is an OVEN not a cabinet, stuff you want to cook goes in the oven and stuff you want to store goes in a cabinet.

I always check the oven!
I burned up a pizza box one time because i didn't.
"whats all that smoke from???"
open the oven door, see smoldering pizza box
"oh crap, i just gave it oxygen"
Running through house with flaming pizza box, and out the front door.
Live and learn and get crap the rest of your life for it!

If you store things there or once you are a bit older and know a lot of people who do, or unfortunately melt something in someones else's oven, you know to check the oven.
If that's the worse thing that happens you are doing ok! I just turned 50 and the Good Lord still lets me humble myself all the time !!!

Re: OT : checking the oven
I check most fo the time. I forget from time to time. The only reason I check is because of my grandma. I believe they were setting off bug bombs in the apt. she was in at the time. To protect her toaster and afew other devices from being bombed, she put them in the oven. Now, I don't remember who, but somebody turned on the oven, and melted the wires and all the plastic bits.
So, occasiuonally I will. But I never cook at anybody else's place, so I don't. I only check if it's not my oven. My oven is not a storage place. It's for cooking or baking.
