If these old trucks could talk

Post by Sharkdance »

I have been slowly prepping a doner cab for my 70 F250 which has involved quite a bit of time removing, cleaning, and changing over parts from one cab to the other before actualy making the swap.
Now Im pretty sure Keith holds the record around here for "hands on" expieriences in dis-assembling and re-assembling these old trucks but I think we can all agree that as we spend time with these old girls they kind of tell a story.
It might be the 10 year old matchbook found under the bench seat, or the Cracker Jack toy stuffed in behind the glove box for the last 15 years.
It may even be the hack job the previous owner did to the wiring harness. The different color door you never realised you had before.
With 30 sum years of history, these old trucks have a lot they could tell us.

The other day when I was all alone just tinkering in my old truck. I got to thinking, what if she realy could talk? I just wonder what kind of stories she would tell? May sound silly. But thats what I was thinking.
Then my next thought was,, of some of the old cars and trucks I used to have when I was younger and dumber. And how I sure am glad that they CANT tell some of thier stories.

They talk. My parts truck told me it had once had a disrespectful owner. The other two trucks tell me that they were pretty well taken care of. They also both say they have hard time waking up in the morning, but I know they wont let me down. My 72 also told me that the p/o was an electrician. I got it from a used car dealership, there was a sheet of paper with a date of when the original owners wife (probably widow) sold the truck to the dealership. I found a business card under the seat with a guy with the same last name on it.
The 71 does not have much to tell its owner died when it was only a couple years old and it sat in a barn. This is kind of off the subject, but I was looking at a year book of my school from 1973, and I saw a perfect 69 in the background of two pictures. I wonder where that truck is today.

If they could talk, they'd have a lot to say, they've seen a lot..

My truck was running and hauling stuff all the way back to a time when men were still walking on the moon.

Let's see what mine would say....

"Do these new tires make my rear end look fat?"....

"Where have all the leisure suits gone?"....

"Hey,pal, this is a non-smoking truck...Why do you think it's got a plug in the cigar lighter?"...

"Where have all the good AM music stations gone?"...

"Good day to you,too,Paul Harvey"....

"Hey,thanks to Watergate,I have the same name as the President."....
This is the point...I'm....talking about everybody! I'm talking about form! I'm talking about content! I'm talking about interrelationships! I'm talking about God, the devil, hell, heaven!!!! Do you understand???? Finally!!!!

They would say,
(in a grumpy old mans voice)
"dagnabbit, these young whippersnappers with their fancy fuel injection thingies and thier computer controlled contraptions are too dang uppity for thier own good, running around in the fast lane, peeling out, getting 20 some mpg. Back in my day we had leaded fuel and we LIKED it that way. You can keep your fancy schmancy modular engines, I'll take a good ole fashion set of points and be on my way, kids, sheesh"

Mine would talk of how happy it was to be bought off the lot less than a week after it arrived from the plant. And how many beatiful things, places and people it visited.Or was visited by. It would speak of the times P.O.s' Had hauled things with it. And when the neighbrahood dogs pead on the tires.

About sitting in the feild of the last p.o. and rusting for three years before I bought her up. She would tell of my old abusive ways. And of the care I later gave her. She would Say Thanks for the last thirty some years.(to all who have owned her)

Hard to say what mine would tell me. Maybe it would tell me about all the old maps in the map caddy behind the seat and the places it has been. Or maybe about the cowboy or rancher that had the flip-up cowboy hat holder installed and what kinda hat they wore. It may tell me it likes my Stetson better. I would thinks however it would be partial to my Ford Truck ball cap. Maybe it would tell me how long the lariat had been in the tool box in the side of the bed. I am sure though it would enjoy sitting under a star filled summer listening to some old country music maybe Earnest Tubbs or Hank Sr. Maybe it would enjoy just having me lean back against the bed and strum on my old Martin a bit in time with the crickets. All I know is that that's my old Ford out in the driveway is one of the few things around here that belongs to me. I'll take care of it as long as it takes care of me.

Mine talks to me all the time, it talks to me thru the people who come up and tell there stories of the guy who drove the truck, (or one of its brothers) the days they were in what neighborhood. The joy the sound of the bells would bring them as a child, and how their favorite ice cream was a nickel, to a quarter when they were a child. How many memories they have of their childhood chasing my truck.
Also when I listen carefully, as I sit on my stool in the garage, I swear I hear it saying “Thanks for saving me from the scrap heap, and letting me continue bringing smiles to peoples faces“.

Hey 68F100 my second car was a 77 Monte Landau.

I was the second owner of it and it had 92,000 miles when I bought her.

Unfortunately it had a shot 305 which was replaced with a 350.

Kinda miss it except when I am in a small parking lot, then I don't :D

I agree spartman! That thing had a hood that was at least a mile long  Mine was pretty basic except for the buckets and console from the factory. Mine only ( ) had 215,000 miles on it, and had holes in the floors I could put my size 13 through...haha!

The only other cars that I know that had a longer hood were the Toronado's.

My old man had a 69 Toro and now my sister is letting it rot for some reason.

That old girl could haul arse!!!!!! (the car that is)

Yeah the Nova had a long hood as well. Plus that big square(gas hogging) Emblem on the hood. Luckily mine was off the ground a little. If it was that long with a lowered stance i'da Messed something up bad.
