Maryland junk yard help

Post by zoso »

Hey fellow Marylanders or PA, VA folks.

I'm looking for a good junk yard in this area to pick through. I'm in Baltimore, but willing to drive.

the first one is a yard location service. the others are parts finder they will tell you which yards have which parts available so you can go to those yards and probably find even more parts from those yards.

Fordman, the last link you posted is for checking for new parts at dealers.

Yeah, you've got to register on that site (free), and you need the Ford part number.

Interestingly enough, you can search for new or NOS parts for just about ANY make vehicle.

OT - but related - Any issues registering these trucks or other old vehicles in Maryland? I've accepted a job in DC and will be moving out there in a few months. I plan on living in MD, but want to be sure that I won't have problems with registration on a truck or my Thunderbird.

It's for my twin boys, sure they're only 3 right now, but it's all for them! Well, and my twin girls. They're not even 1 yet, but when they are I'll have a pit crew!

Md is expensive to register and antiques need the same liability coverage as a regular car and you can only drive them on weekends. Antique tagged trucks can't have anything in the bed (haul a bag of trash to the dump and get a DOT fine). Emmisions back 20 years. http://www.mva.maryland.gov/

Junk yards? I don't know of any decent ones to the East. Local ones are full of weeds right now. Wait until the first frost, then come up this way. Winfields Auto Salvage up in Warfordsburg PA has a bunch of bumps, usually around 20-30 but it's hill country so be in shape. Decent prices and good exercise. Grimms Auto Salvage here to the East of Hagerstown cleaned up last winter, only a couple left and I haven't been out all summer. They think their stuff is golden too. Albert Crow's yard is up on South Mtn above Rt40. I think he's still running it. Tons of good stuff up there that's still in decent shape. He had 15 '68-'69 Torino's at one time, couple of bumps floating around.

There was a yard listing on CL above I70 in Fredrick county to the east of Fredrick that had some older stuff. I have no idea what's there now and there was a decent yard above Harpers Ferry years ago.

There are others. Usually a yahoo or google search for 'auto salvage, maryland' will bring up tons of leads.

Good idea on waiting until the cooler weather for junking.

As to the historic status, street rods are under a bit stricter scrutiny. Regular old historic tags, at least here in Eastern MD are not a big deal. I doubt your historic car can be your daily driver, but I don't see proving that possible. The wording's key is where they say "primary" vehicle for transporting passengers or property. Also MD lets you use vintage plates as long as your historic plates are in the car. It may be more of a red flag though if its your only car. My other car is a prius to offset the guzzle of the big block. The application is online at the MVA. All the wording is there. I think the hotter the car/truck the more attention. Mine is just an old man 4x2 that cruises at 55-60. I go to the dump all the time, but that may be a county's discretion. If you decide to live in DC for some reason, they will force full inspection and emissions I believe. Its a police state.

In Montana I just registered a 1990 suburban forever for $166. The sticker says "PERM"
