Took a day off from work to watch the dyno tuning of a BOSS 460 CID one with original block and heads. Made over 650HP on a respected dyno. Did it around 5000 too, IIRC.

I think some call it the Shotgun Boss. Don't know why though. Heck of an engine. I think Nascar ran it about a year before it was outlawed for winning too much.
I have seen one in a fast back Mustang. It is a beautiful engine with large, wide valve covers.

I've seen 2. One was in a super nice original Mustang at a show. The 2nd was in a dirt track modified that had a Pinto body. It always sounded strong but the car never seemed to handle very well.

Years ago I was in a muffler shop of Central ave. in Charlotte NC first thing in the morning. Owner said, "be right with you I have to move a junker out of the bay first". He left and then the building started rattling and shaking and I wondered what in the world he was doing. I walked outside and he was backing out a 68 I think jet black fast back that was making so much power I could feel it in my chest at each pulse of the exhaust. You could lean over and see the header connections at the heads. I would the baddest car I have ever seen. He said it was one of about 300 or so at the time. He also said all he did with it was drag race it. lol Cannot imagine racing a car like that every weekend. I would be so scared of wrecking it. I would drive it and drive it hard but I would go down the strip alone and not beside some old rusty chevy. lol

If you have a short block 429/460 you can build a boss, the heads, rockers, valve covers and intakes are being remade. Only cost $8,000. The value of what ever it would be put in would double that.

about 20 years ago i saw one in a mustang a charlotte motor speedway , (now lowes).
he told me the story of how he got the car( i may tell at a latter date).
i asked the guy if he would crank it up.
when it started several people were behind it looking at it
that thing was so loud some of them covered their ears & quickly moved.

ok, didn't want to bore any one.

this guy with the 429 mustang said he got it like this;
his uncle worked for ford motor co. & got the car new. he would' go to his uncle & aunts home for the summer when school was out & spend the summer with them.
(this would be in the early, early '70's ) his uncle would clean the mustang & wax on it & crank it up & he would tell his uncle someday he wanted a carjust like that when he got old enough to drive.
years later the nephew went in the military & served over seas, during this time his uncle past away.
when he got out of the military & came home his aunt was in a nursing home in another state. he would visit her sometime .
during the middle 80's his aunt also past away.
sometime later the will was read & his aunt had left the 429 mustang to him .
he said looking back that he never thought that someday he would own this mustang.

I'm quite familiar with this engine infact Hemi aka Hemispherical combustion chamber based engine is EXACTLY what the Boss 429 was .....but to reiterate the Boss 429 was a Ford Based Hemispherical head big block engine.......the consumer level 429 variant was produced because of homologation rules dictating a certain number would have to be produced and sold to the public in order to qualify for the races researching will get you more details though.......

theres a world of difference between a 429SCJ or regular truck grade 429 totally different animal Hemisperical vs. conventional head
