Most parts can still be bought at your local auto parts stores. LMC truck, NPD and other places sell most other items that you cannot get at the parts stores. Go online to these places and request a catalog. Looking through these catalogs is like putting a f year old in a candy store. You'll want one of each thing listed. LOL
Finding a mechanic is a personal issue. I would go by word of mouth and find a shop that has a good reputation. Ask your friends and faily to recommed a shop/mechanic. These trucks are pretty easy to work on compared to todays newer vehicles.

I agree also. If you are going to fix up and old truck like these you are either going to have to pay a mechanic a lot of money or learn to work on them yourself. They are one of the easiest to work on that is for sure.

I dont mind working on it myself but i keep having nightmares about me driving the truck and the breaks failing. my thing is i can buy a repair manual and read the directions but how do i know where the problems are to start with? i have no one mechanically inclined in my fam. my mom did repairs on it when dad was still alive but it was is way better shape than it is now

Re: Truck is coming home... now what...
If the truck runs that is a plus. I would start with visually inspecting hoses, belts and fluid levels. You know, the easy things. You can easily get under it and grease all the fittings and stuff like that. If you are concerned with the brakes, you can either try inspecting them yourself or have a shop do it. Drum brakes are not hard and disc are easier. Changing the brake pads is involved but can be done. Just remember if you have questions, just post them and everyone will try to help you. This place is incredible on knowledge. Glad to hear the truck is coming home.

Look at it this way. The more you do, the more you learn.
