I got sick of the smoke and tinkered with my pump and have a pin messed up now in pump. I have spent nearly $1500 in my pump in two different times to the shop and I said no more this time. I can work on a v8 but not so much the diesel!
Sorry to hear about the diesel issues, it is an awesome truck for sure! I love the bed!

Many Ford bumps / one 76' EB / and several dents through the years.

What a strange way to deal with the problem.

First off, I'd suggest taking the TH400 and GV to the scrapyard. They don't work with a low RPM diesel and you got that advice when you first started your project. Go with a close ratio stick, a 47RH or a new electronic auto if you want the complexity. Is that an HX30 on there? If it is, get rid of it. The small comp H1C with a 12-16 turbine housing is a far better turbo for your use. The 30's 6cm housing is way too small for anything over 130HP.

The VE is one of the simplest IP's made. There is no need to ever take one to a shop. Everything in that pump can be replaced, including a brand new stock size hydraulic head and cam plate for under $200. This repair work can be done in any garage with basic hand tools. The VE needs proper internal pressure. You need to see 75 PSI+ at 2500. Inlet pressure isn't as important, but I find they like 25-50 PSI.

You might be blaming the pump for something that isn't it's fault at all. What pistons and injectors are you running? 7163's? Are you hitting 35 PSI with headbolts and an old gasket? Were the bolts torqued using torue-angle or straight torque method? What do the injectors pop at and are they giving a crisp pop? What is the cranking compression on all 4 cylinders? Have you verified camshaft lobe lift is good on all cylinders (flat cams are commonplace on old breadvan motors that got 40K mile oil changes).

Bottom line is before blaming the pump check the obvious stuff. These little engines are reliable killer MPG powerplants when assembled correctly. Screw something up or ASSume that the guy before you knew what he was doing and you will never figure it out.

If your 4BT was running right that dually would be quick with only the tiniest puff of smoke at a full throttle stab and no smoke under boost. High boost numbers do not equal horsepower. Anyone can hit 35 PSI with one of these. 100 HP can put down 35 PSI if it's messed up enough.

as far as specs on every thing I dont have tools to check most of that. I messed up by deciding to take the lenny pin out and it got hung in the bore. I got it to come out but the pin that rides on it in the bore stuck closed. I shot oil down in there and took off the throttle to get to the front of the pump. I worked the pin in and out and got it freed up. I went back and installed every thing back just as it was before. the engine tried to crank like it had air in the lines so I cracked the lines several times and bleed them. Truck still acted the same so I started talking the top off to get to the fuel pin and hit the throttle as the fuel pin came out. The pin that rides on the fuel pin came out into the bore and I have not been able to get it to budge since. The fact is I love these trucks and love diesels but I am no mechanic. I can build a v8 and set tolerances and have a good running truck with a little help from a carb man but I have no one around that can help with the diesel. I have to much money tied up in this truck for me not to enjoy it and I dont make the money I use to to waste on, try this and try that. It seems that if I had some one around when I was growing up to teach me this stuff I would have went into the field of automotive. My dad always told me I went to far with every thing I have worked on and maybe he was right. Dustin if you think you may have a answer to fix I would appreciate your advice. I have enjoyed the turbo on there with the od but I drive like a old man for the most and it seemed to work well exept for the smoke. The factory injectors were rebuilt and set by a diesel shop in sulpur springs Tx. They re gasket-ed the pump and did the injectors and they charged me around $1000. Right now I am considering that as part of me going back to the v8. I can rebuild my 289 with all my stuff I have for $800-1000 with the boring and doing the heads and all. I have mounts and a t18 with a drive shaft that will work so it will be pretty much drop in except for a few little odd and ends. Any way got to get back to cleaning the shop to make room for the teardown over the winter.

There's better ways to handle this than me typing for an hour. If you want my input on saving your 4B PM me and I'll give you my number to call.

I've been through this crap, solving these problems is how you learn how to do this stuff. You want it to work? Ask for some help!

funny how things work out. I had a buddy call and tell me about a super clean 83f100 with a 300 and 4 speed with 86000 original miles. I went and looked and the guy traded for one of my junk trucks. Looks like now I have a full running gear to put in my truck. I will put the 289 on the back burner for my 78 when it needs a engine. The 300 should make for a great cruising engine and pull what ever I want with the 4.10s. I probably will try to find the adapter to mount the gear vendor behind the t18 for cruising. I have a set of dual manifolds off a newer model. I was thinking I might run turbo mufflers into my 5" stack and maybe it will be a low rumble rather than sounding like a bumble bee.
