Utility box for shop work

Post by Velcro »

I've run my own signshop since 1970, and picked up a lot of tips from "old timers". This item is probably the best. It was made initially for lettering truck doors, but I've used it for numerous other jobs.
I fashioned a wooden box, measuring approx 20' wide, 14" deep, and 8" high. There's a wooden rod that spans the 20" dimension, and is lag screwed into the centers of the short ends. This privides the handle to carry the box, when I use it to get a lot of small parts to a remote location. Because of the 3 different dimensions, you sit at different heights. The lowest will work for doing brake work. The mid-size keeps you at the height for efficient headlight, taillight & grill work. The tallest dimension lets you reach across the fenders for underhood access.
Adjust the dimensions to fit your own height.

your talking about some sort of collapsable box? that would slide itself back together for different heights?

No, Fordman, this is a rigid box, and I've never had the reason to "disassemble" it because it always seems to have something "stored" on top of it. I originally made it for lettering truck doors, because I had to be in one place, at different heights for most of a day, and that's tough on the back, and knees when adjusting my body height.
Since I had it, I found uses for it in many things. I just finished putting cedar shakes on the house, and working in 8" increments for long spans, it even worked there, as opposed to hauling a ladder across the house.
For those who seem to constantly be working on their trucks, it seemed like a natural addition to the garage. Sitting low makes the job easier than stooping or kneeling.

Could you post a pic or two of this?

I am having a hard time visualizing it.

Could just be a case of the Mondays

Spartman, we ALL have our share of "Mondays"!
An explanation here will be faster than me taking a digital and posting it, so here goes...
Imagine looking DOWN at a box on the floor.

Left to right measures 20"(+/-)
From your toes away from you measures 14"(+/-)
The Depth of the box is 8" (+/-)
At the open end, running left to right, is a rod (handle) for carrying.

Depending which way you set it determines how high you'll be sitting.

Hope this helps.
