2011 return of the 302

Post by 67 ford f100s rule »

I got this months Hot Rod and its main story is the all new for 2011 5.0 liter(302). The engine is a variable timing dual overhead cam so its like having two different types of cam. This engine is supposed to be making about 400 horses which is about what the new camaro v8 with a liter less. This 302 also has the capabilities to have alot of boost applied to it.

I am thinking that 2012 rolls around i will have to find a wrecked 2011 mustang with the new 302 for Jeanine.

It's not a 302. It has no relation to the Windsor or Cleveland blocks of old. It's a new generation of the modular V8, replacing the 4.6L they've used since 1995. It's strictly a new, overhead cam, 5.0L modular engine.

If you convert 5.0L to cubic inches, it actually comes out to 305.12. Therefore, the Chevy 305 was closer to 5.0 liters than the Ford 302 was. And neither of them was exactly 305 or 302 cubic inches. It's all about labeling.

My mom had a 1978 Buick Skylark with that Chevy 305 in it. They were only rated at 145 hp. Amazing.

And in 1978 the Mustang was rated at 139HP with a 302 in it (88HP in the base model 4-banger). They were dark times for everyone. Performance was severely limited by emissions regulations. Build quality was terrible. It's really no wonder why the imports gained such a stronghold in the 70s when the Big Three were turning out junk like that.

I think it is an interesting engine...

I wish Ford Racing would do some more emission legal crate engine action... GM is doing a lot in that area...

I finally got a chance to read the Hot Rod article...

I want one! What I really want it in is a FFR Roadster (not supposed to call it a "Cobra")... :D

Or a Brookfield Roadster...

But you really cannot argue much with a 5.0/302 (and it is "within a few decimal points" of a 302) DOHC 32v V8 making over 400HP. It should make the Mustang more than capable against the Camaro and Challenger. I am sure bolt on superchargers will be out 6 months after it hits the street.

MMFF did a decent write up on the motor, at peak torque it has around 110% volumetric efficiency, ridiculous. The cams have variable timing, advance them down low for more torque, retard them up higher for more HP. It also looks smaller vs. the current generation of mod motors.

Car and Driver matched it up against a 2011 BMW M3 Coupe Competition Package in the October issue.

I won't spoil the read except to say ... Go Ford!

Saw an internet video where some guys took one, put in 4.56 gears, drag slicks, a 125 shot and better exhaust and ran a 10.99 or so. Can't remember exactly, but I think the car was otherwise stock. Can't imagine the clutch, tranny, and rear end would hold up to a lot of running like they did, though. I think you can google 10 second 2011 mustang and see it.

Man! Got my heart racing hearing and watching that. That is a pretty wicked car for mostly stock. It was running a 100 shot fogger though. I like all motor myself. It was an all stock engine with no other power adders. They even ran the stock air filter. lol

Looks like this engine is also going to be available in the 2011 F150. (360HP, 380FTLB) along with an EcoBoost V6 (365HP, 420FTLB @ 2500  ) and the standard V6 and 6.2.
