Bump appreciation

Post by sargentrs »

Been working on my stepson's '93 Toyota Celica. Gotta pull the 5 spd. transmission. May be clutch, may be synchronizers. Either way, the tranny's gotta come out. After 5 days and about 20 man hours between the two of us and the tranny's just now ready to drop, all I can say is.............I LOVE MY TRUCK!

i feel your pain, i had an 84 honda accord with an auto trans. the starter fried and chewed a bunch of teeth off the fly wheel. the beauty part is that the ring gear is a permanent part of the torque converter.

Got the clutch and transmission back in my stepson's Toyota. Only took us 2 weeks! In the process had to replace wheel bearing on driver's side. Talk about a PITA! Good news is the clutch works great and the car shifts good 1st, 3rd, 4th and 5th. The bad news is the synchronizers in 2nd are in bad shape for all the gear grinding he did while it was acting funny. Clutch disc and pressure plate both had springs fallen out of 'em so that's what was causing the erratic shifting. Shoulda fixed it two months ago when it first started acting up but since it was erratic and worked fine sometimes he kept driving it till it quit. Tried to tell him but.........lessons learned. Looks like he'll be going 1st to 3rd until he can afford a transmission. Anyway, now that I've been through it, we could do it again in a weekend. The "school of hard knocks" is a great teacher, ain't it. BTW did I mention that .... I LOVE MY TRUCK!

We replaced the 3.0 motor in my sons truck and I won't do that again. The thing is shoehorned in there and has so may wires and hoses. It took us awhile to get it out. I can get the motor out of my wifes 70 in about an hour. They just don't make them like they use to.

Then they wouldn't be able to charge what they do at the service centers. Minimum quote I ran across was $350 just to "remove and replace". Standard labor quote for R&R was 8 hours. And, to be honest, if I could've afforded it.......I'D HAVE PAID THEM! But, seriously, now that I've been through it, I believe me and my stepson could do it 6 hours now. Still a long way from the ease of a bump!
