In down town Anchorage there is a store that sells all kinds of hunting equipment. We stopped in there and there is a stuffed Kodiak or Brown bear that stands about 14Ft tall. I have a picture of a pretty girl in our unit standing in front of it. That thing just dwarfs her. The paws on that thing were just plain HUGE! Comes after you mad just bend over and kiss it good bye because it is over. lol

They can get pretty big for sure. I've only had one real close encounter, but have seen a few in the wild. One night while on a moose hunt, we had one walk close enough to the tent that it indented the tent when it walked by. In the morning, we tracked it and it was on it's way to feed on a gut pile that was a little ways away. Needless to say, I did not sleep much that night. Lucky for us, it had no interest in visiting us.

Of the larger animals, we also have caribou, brown bear and musk-ox around where I work. It's nice having wildlife around.

We've had a problem with black bears in town this summer. Several bears were shot or relocated. The weird temperatures and rains weren't good for natural fruit and berry production so the bears are coming into town for food.

I have yet to see a living black bear or grizzly, though...

During my stay a little south east of Libby, I never saw the bears. We had a couple mountian lions walking the fence line, but I never saw them either.

We've got those and wolves up in the Yaak area. I don't think there have been any in town O.o
