Thrush sound

Post by Mancar1 »

Now that I went to all the fun of installing Thrush in my dual exhaust, 390, did it myself. I really don't care for the sound. Not deep and throaty enough for me. I am thinking about taking the 68 in and having 3" with flowmasters put on. That is if the CS has the space to allow for 3" exhaust. I now have stock size. :hmm:

I recommend Magnaflow over Flowmaster.

I have had flowmasters on a Ford truck several years ago. Sounded good, but it was kinda hard to hold a conversation when driving. I will check out tha Magnaflow. Thanks BobbyFord.

What is the difference between the two? The new '69 SB has what I assume is blown-out cherry bombs-sound good, but VERY loud. Probably need to replace the mufflers, to get back in the good graces of the neighbors! :D Want it to have some decent sound, but not overpowering...Suggestions?

I have flowmaster 40's, dual exhaust, 429. I don't really like them, but they arn't bad.
They have a "drone" you can ask just about anyone that knows about exhaust and they will probably say flowmaster is not a very good performance exhaust.

I pulled the Flowmaster 40's and put Hooker Aero-Chambers on my 71 and like them. They don't have the dreaded drone. I have set off a few car alarms in the parking lot with it though but that is only if I ride the brake a little. lol

I put Spintech mufflers on my truck and Ilove the sound. Like some of these guys I've had Flowmaster 40's, Hooker Aero Chambers, glasspacks, turbos, and now these and I can say the Spintechs almost tie with the Aero Chambers for the best sound quality without having any headache inducing drone. The Spintechs are a bit louder and are physically smaller but have a great sound.

BTW, is your engine all stock? 3" exhaust is quite large for a stock engine and you will get some loss of low rpm torque if that's the case. 2 1/4" is plenty large for duals on a stock 390. For the big pipe sound just put some long (18-24") 3.5" tips on her. :2cents:

That is the word I was looking for. Drone, oh ya, that is the one thing I did not like about those darn flowmasters I had on my 73 Dent. Couldn't talk over the drone. Consider me talked out of Flowmasters. Been there done that. My 390 is stock for now, but I plan on a build to add some grunt, but not to wild. Already been there, my 73 was a little much. If that is possible. I guess I should wait for the oversize exhaust until latter. Nothing wrong with it as it is. Better get my new wheels, get A/C fixed, gas gage working right for dual tanks. Ect ect. Like my better 1/2 says to me, "One thing at a time, and before long it will be done." LOL Like it all ever gets done. Enough for now. I am dronning on. Guess I will go play with the 68.
