hwy driver

Post by bigredball90 »

Im looking at getting a "new" car for hwy driving. Ill be doing allot of it next semester. It needs to get over 25 hwy, be a manual, be american company made, cost under 5k, and be easy to work on. Prefer older cars but newer is ok as well. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Wasn't a manual but the best road car I had was an 88 Lincoln Town car. Road like a....Town Car. lol Got 25 mpg on the interstate and kept up with traffic great. Nothing like riding to the next job site in style either. lol

Certaining most cars under 5k have alot of miles, I would look at 2003 Ford Taurus you usually can find them with under 80K on them. There not the best looking car, but they run. My mom drove one for years with out any major issues, just changed the oil and brakes. 28 HWY also! mmm another idea is go to autotrader and type in 0- 5000 bucks and any makes and pick one! I understand you said american made, but keep your opinions open.

I'd be looking at late '90s early '00s Rangers or B-Series Mazdas, we had one with a 3.0. and a 5 speed for a few years and it got decent MPGs. One of my teachers told me he got 28 MPG out of his ranger after doing a full tune up and cleaning MAF, replacing 02 sensors, and installing a better flowing exhaust. You might also want to look at '94-'98 Mustangs with the 3.8. and 5 speed, they get up and go better than the 3.0.s do in the Rangers and are rated for higher gas mileage. Those would be my first choices they are both decent looking vehicles, with fair power and good gas mileage can't ask for much more . If you do decide to venture to foreign trucks I'd say go with a late '80s-mid/late '90s Toyota, I'm no fan of any vehicles made over-seas but those Toyotas are tough little trucks especially the ones with the 22RE's and last forever. Good luck searching for a new vehicle!

don't overlook a good 3.8L v6 powered Cougar or T-bird. mine does right around 24-25 highway. keeps up with traffic. I'll be throwing a 500-1000 paint job at mine to keep it looking as nice as it runs. reminds Me I must change oil and tune up the engine.

25mpg isn't that great...

I'd probably look for a Focus at your price point and requirements...

I understand the "American Company" requirement, but if you were willing to compromise on that, you could pick up an older Volvo, Mercedes or VW which would probably give you excellent service...
