Really? not to get to far off topic i think if you were only pulling 30mph maybe its time for a compression check.I have a 72 f250 4x4 with a 360 and four speed I just hauled a cord of madrone and euke I was able to get on the freeway and drive normal no problem grade and all.The 360 is more of a truck motor than a 390? I may just be old school but I thought there was no replacement for displacement?

If he couldn't go over 30 mph with that load, there is something wrong
no matter what engine it is. Almost makes me wonder if the tranny wasn't
slipping.. But I wonder about timing, and various other possible issues.
Hard to guess on the interweb...
I know with my 300, I'm pulling a heavy ute bed, and a bumper that
probably weighs 300 pounds.. Then I add trailers, payload, etc, and
I still have no trouble doing freeway speeds. And my 300 is bone stock.
BTW, a 390 is not exactly a wimp when it comes to torque. It's a long
stroke engine much like the 300. If you got the carb, it should have the go.
I had a 390 in a 67 LTD, and it only had a big two bbl.. But it would still go
pretty good.

I've pulled 6,000 lbs worth of truck with 2,000 lbs in the bed. 302/3 speed manual/freeway flier gears.

That 390 shouldn't have a problem.

I think that's what I like best about having an F250CS. I have the dual diaphragm booster pushing twin pot front discs and big drums out back that I have property adjusted (all factory parts for the '71CS). My old truck had no problem stopping that load I had. I highly recommend all bump owners do the disc conversion if they can find the parts in their local yard.

That's in the works, I have the discs & spindles, just need to go get a hydrobooster. May as well go to the top if I'm going to convert.

Having the bigger brakes on the 3/4 and 1 ton trucks is very helpful. My F350 is still drum all around, but they are massive drums. When they are adjusted properly, the drums can stop 6000 lbs of truck and another 2 toms or so of load pretty. I don't try to break any speed records when heavily loaded, but the drums aren't that bad. I have most of the parts for a disc conversion, but haven't felt the need to spend the time and money on it yet. I'll get it eventually, there are other more important things to take care of first.

Correct, and could weigh more depending on the moisture content.

Doesn't take much at around 8lbs to a gallon of H2o, a lot of it in a wet load. I get around 26 yards of fill dirt a year delivered to the cemetery. Lotta dirt. Lotta LBS. Lotta work

The ground is alive. I have the fill dirt to fill in low spots that develop. Also during a burial backfill the last tractor bucket full is taken from the fill dirt pile. The ground is very rocky. (Lot of big rocks.) Some of the old timers say the grounds manager of old had to use dynamite to blast the rock out. Now the backhoe does the job. The bucket does a lot of bouncing at times.. So the fill dirt is for burials and around the grounds as needed.
