OT bicycle fork threads

Post by fordman »

i know this i s wierd one. my sons bicycle has a bent and messed up front forks. they aren't replairable by putting new forks on the spindle that goes through the neck of the bike. so i got a whole different set of forks fo rthe bike. but the neck on the new forks is too long. i need to cut off the forks and rethread the neck so i cna put it back together. does anyone have a clue as to tell what the threads are on the neck. they look like a fine thread. the bike was probably made in china i am guessing. the brand name is NEXt. a walmart bicycle yes.

Not sure what thread the neck is. I would measure how much you need to cut off of the neck. Then remove the forks from the bike. Thread the keepernut past where you need to make the cut. Cut the neck to length, then back the nut off. As long as you don't seriously hack up the threads, the nut will clean up the threads enough to get the nut started after re-installing the forks.

I believe they are fine. Could you use some sort of spacer above or below where the forks go in. ? Or would that throw things off to much? One of a kind custom bike.

In years gone by I have built many a bike from junked parts. For our kids, and the neighberhood kids wherever my orders took us.

once i cut it off there will be no threads left to screw the nut back onto. i have no idea what kind of spacer i coul duse to space it with since the fork ride on the bearign and the bearign goes in the cup in the top and bottom of the frame neck. i really wish i could just find the correct set of forks but this seems to be a one of a kind or something wierd. i know the threads are fine. but i am unsure if they are metric or american and or what size they are.

That's the problem with department store type bikes. You could go to a local bike dealer and see if they can get the part you need, but it may end up costing more than the bike is worth.

Ask the bike shop if they can convert it to a threadless headset and stem. Most racing bikes have those now and the bike shop should have some used parts you could buy.
