There is a Scout for sale by my house with a exterior cage, winch and big tires. Has a soft top. Wish I could afford it.

I installed the radiator when I worked on the line. A lot of Scouts in my area of north eastern Indiana were used for snow removal work at shopping centers and parking lots. Those ones rusted out pretty quick from the road salt.

Where's the rough part?

My buddy had a '78 that he kept driving until the frame rusted in half. The gas tank was the structural part on that side... Windows held up with wood wedges, sheetmetal and carpet to plug the holes in the floor, duct tape the extra holes in the roof. But the I6 and 4 speed would not die.

Nice find. I work for a family owned chain of dealerships that sell International and Peterbilt trucks. I'm told the their Eau Claire, Pennsylvania branch still has some N.O.S. Scout parts. Here's a link if you would like to check them out.

Nice Scout, I'm a pretty big Scout fan myself. Have a '69 800 w/304 in my stable. had a few 4banger 80's as well. Just like the bumps, they're very simple rigs. Those are stock Commanche wheels on that thing, other than that, you're sure it's a commanche? If you decide to go with some big fancy wheels on her, toss those wheels in my Garbage can would ya? :D

the only downside to them I think is parts, nobody makes aftermarket nothing for the 800's. you can find some stuff for the Scout II's but basically nothing for the 800's. I made my own greasable shackles and spring perches for some lift. the upside... take it for a spin everyday and count how many months it takes to see another 800 out there. to me, that's alot of cool factor..... try that in a J**p. I've had my 800 for 6yrs now and I have only ever seen one other 800 on the road with me.... one thing that burns my backside, I'll get to a light and some bonehead will say, " nice J**p" grrrrrrrrrrrr.... have fun with that thing, I do

attached are some pics of my '69

That's a really nice 800!

Yeah, just trying to find something as simple as the Brake Master Cylinder has been a major challenge (step bore for the V8). I finally ended up rebuilding the stock one with a kit from Scoutparts.com. Thank goodness the bore was still decent!
I had to fabricate the little brake lines from the wheel cylinders to the brake hoses (man those bends are tight!).
Nobody makes the inner axle seals for a Scout closed knuckle Dana30 any more, so I had to use the next closest size, and make them work...
I'm used to building and repairing popular stuff, so this has been a real eye opener.

I haven't ordered the line set ticket yet, but I have the pictures from when he bought it (had all the Comanche decals). The underside of the hood is sporting Butterscotch paint, under the white repaint that is flaking off. What is left of the original hard top is butterscotch, has the sliding top windows, and the holes where the headliner panels screwed on. The inside of the glove box door is butterscotch, Chrome rear bumper (front is a home built job), Rally wheels, etc. For $20.00 I'll order the line set ticket, just to have. But yeah, it's the real deal. I don't plan to go back to original. The tub is too far gone for that. It looks like a patchwork quilt, on the inside. If I replaced the tub, it wouldn't be original, and no way could I represent something that wasn't 100% legitimate. So I'm going to have some fun with it.
I'll redo the paint and stripe scheme to the original Comanche theme, Which I really like. But, all the bright-work is getting redone in gloss black.
When the Mustang is finished, I'll probably tear into this for some serious upgrades.

Today I picked up a full length hard top from an Aristocrat, along with the hoop style roof rack, and sliding windows. Also picked up both doors, both fenders, a left rear quarter panel, and a 1/2 top (just for fun). Next summer should be very busy!
The soft top is in really bad shape, so I'm going to work the full hard top over first, and get it on as soon as I can. Will look great next spring with a canoe on top, Two dogs with their heads stuck out the windows, and my better half in the passenger seat. :)

Shouldn't be too bad to fix that one up, it looks pretty solid. Seams like there's a lot of Binders still left around me. Several have large collections in my area, some real unique rigs too.

If Scouts had any leg room for tall people and Early Broncos didn't exist I bet I'd have one.

Scott,

Good score man! I too used to have a Scout, (of sorts) a dear friend of mine in Florida had given to me. It was a 67 with the original slant engine that had been turned into a swamp buggy, (it sat on airplane tires). I wound up scrapping it out and evilbaying most of the parts from it. Was a sad day when I left South Florida and had to trash a lot of parts from it. :(
Didn't the Scout come out before our brother the Bronco if I remember right?
I was always told Ford tried to copy the Scout's popularity with the "old style" Bronco, (I hope to own another someday).

The Scout line was 5yrs old when the Bronc came out.....

Scott, the good news on the Scout part problem is alot of more popular IH vehicles sported alot of the same parts... I went through some issues with my brakes too. currently I am on the lookout for some Scout II axles to slip under her for disc brakes.... and maybe SOA.

That sounds like a dead ringer for a Commanche. I had a guy try to sell me a "Commanche" but there wasn't a dab (nor had there ever been)of butterscotch on it. been suspicious everysince. Glad you want to keep it orig and save it. I think the commanche's are awesome... you can see I borrowed from the paint scheme with my black hood. Little bride asked me if I meant to do that.... um, yea.

you scored a 1/2 top!? That's what I want, I spend most of the time topless and in the winter nobody want to ride in it but me.... I really don't need a full top..... mine's in great condition, altho I have never done anything with it.... .when I get the $'s I really want to blast and rino it... never the less, it spends all it's time on sawhorses.... 1/2 top would be tons better for me. Make sure the 1/2 top is for an 800.... I believe the windshield rake was just a hair differnt on the 80's.... I could be wrong on that, but there is a difference

Thanks for all the great comments guys!
It's amazing how many people either owned a Scout, or know someone who did. Kind of like the old Bumps and Mustangs. They were really popular. I've had people tell me stories while stopped at the gas station. And like the truck and the Mustang, I don't stop for gas if I'm in a hurry. Lot's of great stories! :)
I really wanted a pre- '76 Bronco Ranger, but I just couldn't afford one. And my neighbor is a huge I.H. fan. So when this came along I thought..."why not".
