1968 Shop Manual Set

Post by pelesl »

I'm getting ready to start fixing up my "new" truck. It definitely needs a tuneup and a new clutch. So I want to get the most extensive manuals I can.

I'm guessing what I'm looking for are the shop manuals. If you search eBay for "1968 ford truck shop manual" (http://shop.ebay.com/?_nkw=1968+ford+truck+shop+manual) there seems to be quite a variety of what a "full set" is.

From what I can see, there are books titled "shop manual" with volumes 1, 2, and 3. Some listings show a "Maintenance and Lubrication" manual. Some of the CD stores include a "Ford Parts Book". Is the Ford Parts Book just a list of part numbers?

I'd hate to buy volumes 1, 2, and 3 and find out there's a volume 4 that I'm missing. Anyone know what the "full set" is?

Also, anyone have experience with manuals on CD? I know I'm going to want them on paper at some point, but are the ones on CD searchable, or just scans?

These electronic manuals are great. They're in a dumb format off the disc but are easy to convert ot standard PDF if you're handy with a computer. I have them for a '72 (meant to buy a '71 set) and converted them to PDF, they work on any of my computers.

I also have the full five volume paper set, Chassis, Engine, Body and electrical, Maint/Lubrication, Wiring Diagrams.

Look to the bottom of the page and you'll see Truck Shop Manual CD-ROM, those are scans of the actual Ford shop manual (I also have the vintage factory Ford paper manual for my '71).

Thanks to all for the replies. I'm going to start with some pre-greased books off eBay. I'm not looking to restore this truck---just get it running well.

Thanks Donnie, I think the 1969 may work. I have a donor 1967 2WD that I'm working to get the 1968 4x4 right. But, some of the parts don't transfer. The stereo out of the 67 had closer dimension shafts that the one in the 68. :hmm:

So if I get a set I'd wnt to be sure I'm looking at the right thing.

I got the shop manual for my 68 F-100...here are my thoughts...

Its the size of a phone book and contains lots of great information...however, it also assumes you know the name and location of obscure parts that'll have you scratching your head :hmm: it also has information for other vehicles in it which adds a lot of clutter to the manual. I wish I could get one with ONLY F-100 information. Not a big deal though.

Some things are explained very well, and it has some nice diagrams, but there are also some items that I wish had a better explanation. If working with electrical items, download the files from this website and print them out! The manual doesn't really cover these things. (http://www.fordification.com/tech/technical-index.htm scroll down to "Interior / Electrical")

It's decently organized, I wish there were an index in the back to look up all the locations in the book with a certain term. This makes finding specific information tricky sometimes.

The section about engines is very in depth and pretty cool!

I've learned a lot from this manual and it was worth the $40! :hd:
