ok so i set part of my garage on fire tonight

Post by 69rangerf100 »

so after having my welder a year i finally some welding goggles so that i could test it out. started welding up some holes on the floorpan of the cab no thinking about sparks flying around and one of the sparks landed on some paper towels that were under the cab and had a small fire going in my garage and didnt even notice till i took the google off and i also realized why its a good idea to cover up your head(hair) while welding i also caught a spark in my hair and burnt some of my hair and scalp.

i've done stuff similar to that. but i kept a cool head and stumped it out. its something you have to plan ahead for when you weld. you think one quick zap and your done. nope. it never happens like that.

He would likely have to get someone else to stomp out his hair unless he is very flexible. :hmm:

Seriously though, when you can afford it, get a welding hood instead of just the goggles. A fire extinguisher for the garage/shop would also be in order. :2cents:

Good one. I like getting the warm feeling while welding and realizing that the fuz on you pants or shirt is on fire. Flannel shirts burn nicely as do sweat pants.

Nothing says pucker more than grinding steel and watching the spark shower fly over to that gas can in the corner you forgot was there. Been there, done that.

Yea fordman is right when some thing catches on fire just keep your cool. 8)

I remember many moons ago in high school ag mechanics class. We were in the back shop welding up tracks on a dozer. A few grease rags caught on fire but it was nothing major. My buddy who was a junior volunteer fireman grabbed a fire extinguisher and blasted AT the rags. He missed... The blast blew them across the floor still on fire into the front shop or should I say the front wood shop. The rags then caught a pile of wood chips from the plainer on fire. Charging in the front shop he blasted again now at the burning wood chips and blew them all over the shop. :help: Now we had a real problem. Picture 30 frantic High School kids trying to put out this fire.
I grabbed the garden hosed and sprayed down the burning chips and some fellow class mates. Our teacher walked out and stepped on the rags putting them out . Allthough dangerous it was the funniest thing i had seen all year

No real damage to any thing other than someones pride and a huge lectures from teachers and staff on safety. I still laugh about it till this day.

I don't weld inside my garage. My garage is too full to be a workshop. I guess that's a good thing.
