I remember when I was a kid. A guy my dad knew sold Mystery oil. I have a can somewhere that my dad had in his shop when he passed. Had a screw on lid, was about 6oz. This guy always paid a small deposit for the emptys back. You guessed it, he was refilling them with motor oil, and reselling them. Good old Snake Oil. Don't remember what happened to him, but never seen him around again.

One that I've actually had great sucess with is called "seafoam". when i had my jeeps, i would pour about 3/4 of the can into the running engine with through the brake booster vacuum line, then pour it in heavily till it stalled. Then let it sit for 5-10 minuites, pour the rest of the can in the tank, and start it up and watch the grey/black/white/blue smoke show. I did this on my 1987 toyota supra as well (it blew a headgasket about a month later due to being overheated), and actually looked inside the motor at the head, piston, and valves. it did a pretty good job of cleaning it out.
