It's a jeep thing, I don't understand.

Post by 1971ford »

Got a call from a buddy. Went like this.
"Hey Ryan... how's the 4x4 doing? you fix that hub?"
Ryan: "WHERE ARE YOU STUCK NOW?"
"oh i'm by sierra college off this little trail stuck in a little creek."

It's 8 at night. I have school tomorrow. So of course I head out to help with the highboy.

First off I see the trail he got into. Starts with a big drop off the end of a dead end road into the trail. It's all mud. NO traction. I go down, and here's the trail. It's all wet, it had just rained, huge puddles everywhere, pretty narrow, lots of trees.

After a mile and a half of granny low creeping down the trail i find this

Image

This is where I ask him WTF he was thinking. Whatever i hook up my strap to the front crossmember because my rear crossmember probably isn't strong enough because I just slipped two bolts in it for now because i'm doing a mustang tank swap.

I pull it right out.

Of course the jeep will not start, it is makign a horrible grinding noise. So I pull him, in reverse, in granny low, at midnight, a mile and a half through this muddy, rough, narrow trail 100% blindly watching someone behind my truck that i didn't know until this day. He was a good spotter luckily.

In conclusion. I don't understand that "Jeep thing". And I love my 4x4 lol

it is a jeep thing to go anywhere under the assumption that a jeep CAN go anywhere due to effective if not truthful advertising & marketing.

It's a Jeep thing, and that is exactly why I drive a Ford.

It is also a 4X4 thing with some I know. They have to learn the hard lesson before they will believe. 4X4 doesn't mean you can go anywhere without getting stuck. It is just a lot worse when one owns a jeep.

I owned a Jeep for a while. It was fun. I got stuck plenty, broke it a few times, and finally let Chrysler have it back. You need deep pockets and good friends if you wheel in anything off road. Rule #1: Never go out alone! :2cents:

I had an '83 CJ7, straight six, 5-speed, posi front & rear and never got stuck. Of course, I never drove it into 4 ft. of water, either.

Last "True" Jeep would have to be a WWII Ford GPW as far as I'm concerned. These late model plastic wannabes are a poor excuse for a real Jeep... with FLAT FENDERS!!

Course a '66 through '77 Ford Bronco is the next best thing to a Ford GPW.

well he went out there to the jeep where we left it since i couldn't pull him up the muddy 3ft ledge (could barely get myself out!)to get back onto the street, and apparently it fired right up and he drove it out and home.

But i agree, the early jeeps are badass, not a fan of the newer jeeps. Early bronco's are even better.

Been on both ends of that phone call. Not fun either way at the time but makes for a good story later.
