Well, this thread has inspired me as well. I dip 2 cans of Skoal a day. That's $8 a day, $56 a week and $3,136 a year. To put these numbers in perspective, $56 will buy exactly 19 gallons of 93 octane gas for the bump (today) If I quit, and the price of gas doubles, I'll still spend the same amount on fuel that I was spending on fuel and Skoal so....

I'm quittin too.

I'm glad you did start this thread. I'm not one to change the world or it's view on smoking. "Smoke em if you got em", it's none of my business. But if you want to quit, I am more than willing to share my experience with hopes that you will find the freedom and piece of mind I have found.

Trucks and cigarettes seem to go together for me. I remember when I was young (younger), stumbling out of bed and driving a Chevy to work. I was trying to control my habit by waiting until I was out of the house to light up my first smoke of the day. It was kind of cool to watch the smoke roll out the wing window on a cold morning.

They stopped putting wing windows on trucks. Pisses me off.

Now I got an old Ford with a wing window and I don't smoke so I can't flick the ashes out the wing as I drive. Pisses me off.

Good job David. My wife quit cold this last August. She was a real peach after 20+ years. In the end, all my bitchin' and proddin' didn't even make a dent in her habit. She had to come to the decision on her own. She pulled it off though and you are too.

Congrats! :D

Make me wonder why some people start up again after going through all the pain and discomfort and actually seeing positive results like yours.

My brother quit about the same time I did. He went for a whole year without a smoke. He said, "I decided to start smoking again."
That was 16 years ago. I am so glad I quit 17 years ago. I never want to smoke again.

Racer Z wrote:I'm keeping this short. I want to offer you my support in you new-found "smobriety". I was at the hospital today supporting my mother who had open heart surgery today, valve replacement. I was there 17 hours. She is recovering well.

About six months after I quite smoking, I realized that I was starting to do things that were "active". I was enjoying walking, riding a bicycle and the like. What I hadn't realized that I had been doing, was I had not been doing anything that caused me to sweat. Sweating meant breathing, and breathing hurt. I was not even aware of this until I started to feel better.

When I was in high school I had run track, done a lot of backpacking, swimming and such. I had climbed every mountain peak around the Los Angeles area, San Jacinto, San Gorgonio and others at 10,000 feet plus.

Then I started smoking and smoked two packs of Marlboro a day for about 20 years. Pall Mall or Camel straights if I couldn't get Marlboro Reds. If I was low on bucks, I'd roll Top's.

Never even noticed that I had stopped being active. Was not aware that it hurt to breath. I just kept suckin on the coffin nails.

After I quit smoking and began to heal. I began to become more active again. I eventually became serious about cycling. When I was seven years smober, I pedaled my bicycle from Boston to Colorado. 5,000 miles in 5 months. Took the long route up into Main and Vermont. I climbed Mount Washington. It was a puny 4,000 feet compared to the 10,000 foot mountains of California, but I felt so accomplished. In Colorado I crossed the Continental Divide at 12,000 feet. There ain't much air at 12,000 feet. I was altitude sick and exhausted, but I could breath and it didn't hurt.
glad to her your mom is doing good

Thanks. She is recovering well. Back at home and going for short walks every day. She never started smoking, this is a result of Rheumatic Fever when she was a child.

I find it enjoyable to be able to sit through an entire movie at the theater. I used to get so fidgety about half-way through that I could barely concentrate. Do I dare sneak out for a quick smoke and miss the show?

Now, my problem is that I can't sit through without needing to go pee. Tough trade-off. Peeing wins.
