Goose neck and dump bed...

Post by Bumpside Collector »

Has anyone ever seen a dump bed truck that could also pull a goose neck trailer? I was talking with a buddy about it and he hadn't seen one before. He said it was because you would be relying on the hydraulics to hold against the weight of the trailer while it was being pulled. I wonder if a goose neck ball could be mounted to the frame in such a way that would still allow the use of a dump bed? I'm curious because I have a F350 flatbed with a goose neck hitch that I'd be interested in adding a dump to. I just bought a parts truck with all the parts for a dump bed. If any of you have any ides throw them out and I might experiment with it on my rig.

This is something I am actually considering myself. My gooseneck mounts directly to the frame. Now I dont see why you couldnt add a trapdoor to that in the bed and still have a dump bed. It would sort of seperate the two functions wouldnt it? :hmm: :hmm:

That's what's so cool about a ball in bed setup. It all mounts to the frame, with just a few holes in the bed.
There are two U-bolts that the safety chains go to, that would need the bed slotted for, and the hole in the bed for the ball mount would need to be a bit bigger, but it could be done.
When filling the bed with dirt, or small debris, just put down a tarp in the bottom of the bed, before filling.
Here are a couple of shots on mine in the '72 (what I use to pull th 5th wheel, with a Cody Coupler).
Hope this helps.

And from the bottom side. This steel plate is mounted to the truck frame.

:yt: a support to hold the ball with a flipping ball insert and a trap door if needed. my ball is that way in my 94. its a bracket that goes across to each side of the frame with a flipable ball. when the ball is down all yo usee is the bottom flat part of the ball. there isnt atrap door on it though.

My 72 has the same setup yours has Happy Camper but mine is mounted under the flat bed and there is a trap door. I just bought a parts truck with a dump bed and I think I can mount up the dump mechanism on my truck with the goose neck hitch in place as long as it doesn't interfere with the cylinder. I was just checking to see if anyone had tried or seen this before. I talked to a guy at work today that thinks he has seen this before. The setup he talked about had some cams that would lock the bed down when the dump was not in use. I'll get some measurements and photos and this may become a project.

Did it-done it, except for the dump bed part. Here's my Curt industries hidden gooseneck:

If you go farther into my build thread you'll see where I had my "trap door" placed into my flatbed to accommodate the hidden gooseneck:

Done it on a 90 Dodge 4x4 with a 6bt, not that big of a deal. Used a flatbed with the hitch mounted to the bed. Recycled a pivot and lift mechanism with 1 3/4" pins from another truck so it's plenty strong. Used a pair of short ratchet chain binders on the front to tie the bed to the frame when using the trailer. No drama.

This is what I was thinking about but using some saddles and solid pins at the front or a cam-lock mechanism. I have my donor truck here but I haven't been able to get under it to look at the lift mechanism because I get home from work after dark. Hopefully I can get a good look at it this weekend.

Yes it is possible. Alot depends on they type of hoist you plan to use. A scissor hoist like what is pictured really does not care if it is mounted to the front of the truck or the rear. What it comes down to is the right measurements on the frame ( ie the distance form one hinge point to the other hinge point.) You can google and find hoist install instrustions. These guys sell kits. They also have locks for the bed and youtube videos of the install. http://www.piercesales.com/Items.aspx?c ... IT&key=cat There are alot of other kits as well. Also I would rather have the hitch mounted to the frame than the bed. The bed would work but I think the frame mount would be stronger.( if ti is a dump then you are nmot just wearing out your rear hinge pins and worring if you got the bed clamped down) Also if you just put a trap door in the bed it should work just fine to get to the hitch. Here is where those pictures came from and there is alot more. http://www.tgsales.com/dumpspecial.html

Thanks for the info. I have a donor that I have found has a hydraulic ram for the dump mechanism. I'll have to see if it can be adapted.

Maybe if I ever get up that way I can check it out. I crawled under the parts truck the other day and by what I saw I may be able to adapt it to work. I just need some warmer weather and a torch!

Is it a PTO? Even if you take it off the truck and go to put it on your's YOU MUST make sure its in the right place! To much one way it wont lift all the way up to much the other way the Pump or Cyl might be to small! Google dump bed! There is site that has all the Math and figs on where the best place to mounth the Cyl at!

I'm fixing to take mine off to redo every thing! Im prob gonna go to a 12v pump! Thats a lot less tare on the the trans! + you can drive down the road wile dumping.

Thanks for the info. It is a PTO unit built by Hilbilt in Benton. If you go with a 12v pump do you still use the same cylinder?
