Hemmi's 1971 CS

Post by Hemmi06 »

So I thought I would put some stuff in here because it is spread all over the site.

History: Bought this truck from the original owner in 1995ish. I have done a little here and there but last year I bought a travel trailer and I needed to put HER to work. Bought her some new tires and wheels and fixed all the little brake issues. I did some other regular maintenance and during the process of changing the thermostat all hell broke loose. I cracked the intake and broke the thermostat housing. Long story short, I DON'T KNOW MY OWN STRENGTH!!

So the journey began. May 2010 - I was heck, need to fix the intake so lets do the heads since they are the same since Regular gas. Was getting a little blow by. Thought to myself I don't like that lower end knock so hell lets get the shortblock done. So $3700.00 into the motor. New CAM, shortblock gone through, heads redone, everything mated and ported to match. I did not like the surface rust on the roof so I rattle can it white (Temp fix till full paint job).

Pulled the trailer around and found the battery would die while I was checking the trailer lighting at idle. November 2010 - Looked around here and found the 3G upgrade, done it and works great.

July 2010 with the hard pulling the carrier bearing on the driveshaft decided it was time to die. Had the whole driveline rebuilt to be ahead of any other issues.

December 2010 - Did not like the way the points were a pain in the arse to set so in went a Pertronics 1 - Why did I wait soooo long?

January 2011 - Been looking for a way to keep her cool and get rid of the "airplane propeller" strapped to the motor. I aquired a Lincolon Mark VIII fan from the junkyard and just fitted it today. I am waiting for the fan controller from DC Control to show up and I will finish it off.

I do not have before pics of her but other than the new wheels and white roof nothing has changed.... enjoy!!! :fr: All this stuff could not have been done without the great people here!!!!

Well finished painting and wire runs for the fan. Lessons learned today:

1. A plastic fan can cut like a knife EVEN when not running. (Pinky finger caught edge Injury #1)
2. Under the dash is a VERY dangerous place. Sharp edges EVERYWHERE! (Two knuckles and index finger drew blood!, injuries #2, #3 and #4)
3. Face hurts. Grinned the whole test drive!! (Best injury from the work) :D

Yup I start the day using them kept the paint off my hands. After a few sweaty palms they are hard to get a new pair on so I give up and blood starts flowing!!

So today was a busy one:

Took her for drive 100+ miles round trip to the Turlock Auto Swap Meet. Noticed while going up a grade at about 3500RPM had a slight detonation under full throttle. Got home and backed the advance back 2 degrees to 12BTC.

Finished the electric fan wiring....

Installed a borrowed Tach to see what cruising RPM is. Was in disagreement with my passenger on the cruising RPM while taking the above trip. I was right 2500RPM at 60MPH!! :hd:

Picture of Tach.. May have to buy one myself... 8)

Picture of the painted fan bracket and completed wiring. Don't make fun of the fan overide switch because I have not finalized its final resting place.
