Previous owners modifications
have you ever seen them. and wonder why in the world they would butcher up the truck like that? i have seen center humps cut out and peeled back and not trimmed up. i have seen tire carriers that look home made and stretch frame one side of the frame to hook up to a hanger from the other side of the bed floor. i seen someone who had welded in a hugh piece of road tube that had been layed out flat. and didn't leave the holes for the bolts to be put in. i have heard others talk about wiring problems in there trucks and the nightmares they seem to be. i even seen a chebbie 6 cyl engine and trans put into one of these trucks. he welded the perches to the cross member. i have seen other not so bad mods. like a pair of buckets and brackets out of a car in a truck. the seats sat straight up and down. that didn't seem to bad though. what do you think when you see bad work like that?

I'm looking down the barrel of a complete re-wiring. There are so many wire taps and splices that I have lost count. There is one wire coming out of the steering column that has been spliced together in 4 places that I can see, and the wire changes color all 4 times. Good times ahead!!

No less than three hacked trailer connectors and a brake light that wouldn't shut off.

The wiring hacks are the worst. My '63 was so bad when I got it that I went to the boneyard and got another complete (headlamp to taillight) harness and replaced it. Also the butcher that owned it before me hacked a big enough hole in the dash, you could've fit a VCR in there.

It scares me.
A buddy of mine bought a tubbed out drag car. He kept breaking transmission cases. I rebuild 2 trans for him before I told him id like to take a look at the car to see why he kept breaking cases.
It only took 1 look under the car to see the po used a 1/4" piece of angle iron for the trans cross member.
I suggested he change that first and he didint have any problems after that.

Yeah... PO's can do some weird things... my steering column that was cut open to "fix" the broken shift lever and turn signal switch is an example.

Hey, I can feel everones pain. the PO of my truck cut out the entire radio bracket just to install a $ 19.00 radio. i guess i am one of the lucky one's i have no wiring issues at all since i am technically the forth owner but the 2nd and 3rd owner were my dad and older brother and my dad bought the bump in 1980 so i know the history for the last 31 years

I saw one that the shift lever had broke in the column and the PO had drilled some holes in the dash to connect levers and rods to so that he could shift it into drive, reverse, etc. Most of mine aren't that bad, just some wiring issues.

Definitely wiring here. So much had been spliced and subsequently melted on my truck that I re-wired the whole cab.

I recently desired my 70 with a rebel wire kit. I was a complete wiring virgin but was able to finish the job in a weekend. The wiring back by my hatch plug, I took it all out and rewire it all. It was hanging down so low I could see it from looking at the back of the truck. I had to rewire under my dash, tape was everywhere. When I did my brakes the PO forgot to put a very important adjust spring back in. mmm spraying undercoating in the engine bay where it gets over 500 degrees.
Thats all I have right now!
