They're all gone here in California too. But, it's a lot safer to have a trained idiot pumping gasoline than every idiot pumping gas. Full serve also creates jobs! When I was in high-school and pumped gas, I had to clean the windows and check under the hood. We also had clean public restrooms back then. The price of gas did NOT go down when full-serve disappeared.

Don't confuse the "Full Service" with the "can't pump your own gas"... They just pump the gas and that is it, they don't check your oil, tires, and wash your window like the old Full Service stations used to... Just put the pump in and turn it on, if your lucky you get a person that don't over fill it but at the same time also doesn't under fill it when your traveling and trying to get your gas hog to the next town.

I have had my '70 for almost 5 years and I still get it wrong. I also have a heck of a time finding reverse too of I haven't driven it in a few days.

Yup, there are "attendants" at every filling station. Most places require the attendant to swipe his card to unlock the pump. So, you can't even try to do it yourself.

Back before self serve stations became really popular it was common practice for one attendant to run 2 or even 3 fuel islands with 8 to 12 pumps. When it got busy the attendant had to hustle. Things were a bit simpler though since most older pumps with mechanical computers only required that a lever be pushed to reset the amount and turn the pump on. Some folks who owned bump era pickups learned the trick of pulling in very close to the pump then reaching out with their left hand to pump their own gas. By the time the attendant got to your window all you did was pay them. :)

Did anyone post "reaching over your left shoulder for the seat belt then remember, when it's not there, that it's laying on the seat next to you."?
