Going to try a 6 cylinder

Post by junkyardjeff »

I never had a 300 six but do now,I am buying a 95 F150 with a 300 and 5 speed for a daily driver to replace the 77 F150 with a 460 that I have been driving for a month. I found someone on craigslist looking for a pre 86 with a 460 for the drivetrain so a deal was done and I will buy the 95 I looked at yeasterday, the 95 will be a suspension and transmission donor in a couple years for a 2wd bronco that I want to build when I can find a nice body with mechanical issues. I had the 77 for a couple years while working on my 66 but the gas tank started leaking and it could use brakes plus the body is shot so its time for a newer beater,I never intended on driving the 77 as a daily driver but my 89 crown vic got hit and still waiting on the insurance company.

Should be a cruiser with the 5 speed. And being a later model, it should be EFI. So will probably run about as
well as a stock 300 can run.

It was not the most quickest I have driven but will be good enough for putting around town.

For several years I drove a 81 Ranger, (last yr of the full size Ranger), I got off my Uncle for $500. It had the 300 6 in it with the 4spd overdrive. It was a good truck. It needed a lot of TLC. My Uncle drove, he didn't fix. Vicki and I used to call it my $500./$2400. Truck.
Drove it for about 9 years and sold it for $1000. So I came out good.

Junkyardjeff my daily is a 96 F150 with a 300 EFI and E4OD automatic. I've had it 10 years. It had 39k on the speedo when I got it and has 167k now. I agree it's not the quickest truck I've owned and my 72 F100 gets better mileage but it's dead on reliable. Starts a lot better in cold weather than any carbed engine I've ever owned. My 89 E250 also had a 300 EFI. Scrapped it at 278k because of frame rust. Engine is stashed in my mini barn as a spare.

I got 16-17 MPG on my 81 with the 300, on local driving. Got about 20 on a 240 mile run I took it on.
