New 72 F100 Head scratcher

Post by depthcharge711 »

Well I just went and purchased my new project truck..let me tell you its a handfull. It is a 72 F100 390 with 4 speed and stepside bed. Here comes the whammy..56 bed with 86 chevy 1 ton fenders on it allowing for wider tires. The head scratching just starts there next is the grill it doesnt match everything i have seen on a 72. I will try and add some pictures but it looks like the 68 grille and doesnt look as if it has been rigged into place at all. I have the door plate info from the truck and I am trying to track down and decipher it..I already know the motor isnt original what other surprises does it hold. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

The 68 grill should be a perfect fit on the 72. Perhaps the front clip is not assembled correctly or the grill is not a 68.

the 68 grill will bolt right onto a 72. look at the bumper filler panel below the grille. that may give more info on whether they did the grille swap properly. http://www.fordification.com/tech/67-72ID_01.htm

is the grille aluminum or steel? if it was a steel grille that could have been a no frills truck such as no radio and no trim. a truck that may have been made for government or a whole lot of trucks made for a fleet type of vehicle.

It appears that the PO has installed chebby step side fenders and the steps from a '73 through mid '80's truck.

The bed does appear to be a Ford Flare Side Bed. Any Ford Flair Side Bed from '53 up to '72 has the canted top bed rails as far as I know.

Slow down, take your time and NEVER rush into doing anything in a hurry. You'll save time & money... just ask me how I know.

Because I'm a Ford Guy to my soul, I liked your comment
