Re: Need moral support

Post by F100builder »

Bumps definitely have the 'cool' factor going for them. I know I hardly got a second look when I was in my '04 F150. When I'm driving my '69, I get waves, smiles, and  everywhere I go. I had one guy let go of the front door to an auto parts store and jump off of the sidewalk as my 390 roared to life and I was backing out (no, I didn't scare him!). He said he just had to get a closer look and asked me all kinds of questions about it. He just smiled and smiled and kept looking back at my truck as he turned to go back toward the store and I was driving off. I built the truck from the ground up with recycled parts so I have a lot of pride in my old truck for sure. This, combined with what this guy did at the store and just the head turns and waves I get makes me beam and grin ear-to-ear. A brand new truck can't ever replace that feeling. I like a new truck just fine but along with the 'cool' factor, there is also my 'smile' factor. I have several old and cool parts hanging in my garage. My now EX-wife used to ask me, "why do have all of that old junk hanging on the walls?" to which I replied, "because it makes me smile when I look at it." I also said it was my version of collecting antiques!

The new truck looks just like everyone else's. But everyone knows the old bump. No question which one I'd rather drive.

Haha, Thanks I like that, definitely gonna use that one. Of course my affliction might be partly caused by the intoxicating sound of a strong Ford FE roaring through glasspacks and the occasional :shh: smell of burning rubber, :hmm: ya think?

yeah i have to agree with you on that one. you can beat the feel of a good FE engine

The 390 Ford has been my favorite engine for a long time. I've built quite a few of'em over the years but for a 390 (actually a 401ci) this one is a beast. It's had some work done on the heads, mild cam, streetmaster intake and headers, really nothing special. But even with the 2.75 rear gears it will get up and go and sounds wicked doing it. It purrs like a kitten on the highway but roars like a tiger on demand 8) I'll try to do a burnout video with sound and post it for your entertainment :D

Hey man, you don't need any moral support. You got your head on straight. :D

When my '83 blew up, and I was graduating college with a new job, I could have went out and bought a brand new F250 that would have depreciated like crazy and looked like everyone else's new truck. Instead, I bought a '72 and have been slowly working on fixing her up. Even if I paid someone to do a full restoration it wouldn't cost me more than a new truck, would be just as capable, and would be about 1,000 times cooler. And the girls love a guy with an old truck.

Just tell them to get out of your @$$ untill you start asking to drive one of their trucks.

When I see another old truck, I look at it admiringly. Whether it's just had fresh paint or it's a beater, it looks neat to me. It doesn't matter to me if it's a Ford, Chevy, Dodge or IH. Sometime I see the other driver oogling my old Bump too. We usually wave or say something like, "Nice truck."

This is Los Angeles where people don't smile and wave or say hello. We honk and yell, "GET OUT MY WAY $%%^ &^^%". If I had an new truck, nobody would smile and look admiringly. Nobody would wave and say, "Nice truck."

Brokenarrow wrote:Guys, please tell me I'm not crazy. Here's the deal, I have this new King Ranch :D , but every time I need to go to town for something I walk right past it and drive the old '68  . I have people ask me all the time, "Why the he77 are you still driving that old truck, I thought you got a new one". And I really have no good explanation, only, "You know me, I just like my old Fords I guess". They just shake their heads like I'm out of my mind. So tell me, am I truly "out of my mind", or do they just not get it. :?

I had a 06 XLT, after 4 years got rid of it, just not the same feeling as driving the 68 CS around. I hear ya.

My "new" truck is a '97 F-350 4x4.. yes, I think it drives like a truck, and its "nice" for what it is (14 years old), but when my '72 was running, I bet I drove the "new" truck once a month.

Soon the old girl will be back.. even got a couple hours in on the project tonite.

Anybody can drive a new truck, it takes a certain type of person to drive a 40 year old machine with manual everthing, 4 wheel drum brakes, no "clicker", and that sweet musty "old truck smell". I wish they would make a christmas tree in that scent .
If it's got rust & smoke it WILL make you BROKE
