Re: Gas Price Increase
With the the price of gas rising every day I am glad I kept my 80 Fiesta,I bought it new in 80 and it has 92,000 miles on it and still runs great.Just a little 1600cc four speed that gets 30mpg or better in every day urban driving. I drive my truck a couple of days a month to keep it limbered up.

Re: Gas Price Increase
It doesn't really have anything to do with the gas price increase but if you live in south Texas and are looking for a job it might interest you. Have you heard of the Marcellus or Barnett Shale well now it's the Eagle Ford Shale. It produces both gas and oil. Anyway, Chesapeake Energy is having a job fair next week in Uvalde Tx. Dang, I can't find any info about it on Google. I heard a radio commercial about it. EOG Resources based out of houston just opened an office in San Antonio. They are hiring. There will be plenty of jobs in the oil and gas industry here for the next few decades at least. I used to drive a gasoline tanker so I am considering hauling crude or water or chemicals instead. They need technicians as well to monitor their pipelines.

Another thing that will be good for the economy of San Antonio and south texas is BRAC. Bad for other folks but good for us. Brooke Army Medical Center and Fort Sam Houston are expanding like mad. Here is a recent article about it: http://www.mysanantonio.com/business/ar ... 017070.php
The other thing is that housing prices are still very low. Home prices were already low in this region but you better get over here before things get too crazy.
We already have our new Toyota Tundra Truck plant. I think they are retooling to make more economical vehicles. The tacoma or something.
Yesterday I wanted to put a little gas in my '67 F100 and saw gas was still $3.05 on the corner by my house. (I live 2 miles north of downtown San Antonio a few blocks from a very busy street that connects IH37 to IH10 east to west) I headed down toward the Chevron where gas was 3.09 and was about to get gas across the street at Valero but made a u-turn when I saw it was already at 3.19! I wanted to fill up my bump but only got 40 bucks worth.

Thats pretty close to what I paid when I made the round trip to Lodi for a BBQ on the 17th of Feb. I used my wifes '89 Suburban with a FI 454 and got 11mpg towing the smoker trailer and loaded with meats. 435miles one way.

Re: Gas Price Increase
A few quick points:
Yes, it's getting tougher to drive the Bump, but for me, the Bump is my hobby. My daily driver that I put 25-30,000 miles/year on is a Focus. It gets MUCH better fuel economy than the Bump, and it's paid for. That's all I really care about at this point.
Fuel prices are on the rise for several reasons. Right now one of the biggest reasons it the dropping value of the dollar on the world market. The government is spending more money than it has; to do this, they're running the printing presses (one of the things the government can to do cook its books that we can't do as regular Joes). When it runs the printing press, the value of the dollar compared to the currency of other countries drops (this is called inflation). This makes the price of our largely imported oil rise while our hourly wages stay the same. Soon enough the price of just about everything will rise in suit, since the production and transportation of everything we buy in every day life relies on oil.
Furthermore, our government has put a stop to any possibility of domestic energy production. We're not allowed to build new nuclear power plants, even though Nuclear power is incredibly safe and clean (Even France has something like 80% of its electricity from Nuclear). We're not allowed to drill for oil in shallow locations off shore, and we're not allowed to drill in other areas like ANWR in Alaska. I understand that there are arguments for why these things shouldn't be allowed, but we're paying for it with higher energy costs. "Green" energy companies that work with solar and wind energy still haven't been able to make their technologies viable even after billions in government subsidy. Great ideas, but they just don't pay for themselves.

Re: Gas Price Increase
Let me just re iterate Jamie's point:
NO POLITICS
I realize government and world economies are intertwined with fuel prices, but it needs to stay in that realm and not politics per se (Republicans, democrats, congress, the president and so forth and so on).

Re: Gas Price Increase
OK, got NO POLITICS! But how can one talk about certain issues if we are refused the right to talk about politics. These certain issues go hand and hand with politics. You just can't talk gas prices without bringing politics into it. MaxKlinger mentioned nothing about any side and was vague when talking about the president. If its about be a good American and not talking badly about our president, then I can kind of understand what your saying. But, as good Americans we must stand up for what is right for the people and the our state/s. I am as American as they come. I love this Country and respect the elected officials who do there jobs as they were intended (working for the people, not to whatever agenda gets them reelected). I am also a registered voter who actually goes and votes, so I try to make a difference. I will not however, stand by an NOT voice my opinion on issues that need to be addressed. Since this topic was posted in the general discussion, there should be no issue when politics are brought up. If people do not like politics, then they can chose to not reply to these topics or simply just not to read them. It's an easy fix. I love this forum
and have been glued to it ever since I joined. There is a wealth of knowledge hear and there are a million and one opinions. And, as long as those opinions and knowledge are used constructively and not to put down anyone on this forum, there should be no problems. Please do not slap our hands for speaking about issues that are relevant to certain topics.

Re: Gas Price Increase
Gas prices here are almost $5 a gallon so when I re did my truck I did a body swap with a 1995 f150 chassis. This gave me a bunch of upgrades but because I want to drive my bump every day I used a fuel injected 300 six with an auto w/overdrive as my drive train. Now I know that may not be the answer for everybody but it sure works for me! I probably have the wimpiest bump on the whole forum but I can drive it as much as I want.

Re: Gas Price Increase
Davin, politics breeds high emotions with differing opinions, pissed off folks and name calling ensues. So it's ok to state facts to back up your opinion but do not say the Democrats did this or the President is responsible for that. Keep the politics out of it.
You can say that in your opinion back in 1906 if Ford hadn't started making mass produced autos that we wouldn't be in the mess. You can say that since any market has been deregulated that the prices have increased. Look at phone service, cable TV etc.
In MD gas prices are regulated by region by a consortium of dealer and regulators (govt.) to keep the little guy in business vs. the big chains and Wal-marts out there. Before you could shop around for a 10-20 cent price break, now it's within 2 cents. Sadly WV gas is running about 20 cents higher than MD, VA is cheeper and I'm not sure about PA (all within a 30 minute ride of my home). Cell phone apps with local fuel prices are popular.
The only thing it really means is my bump money is taking me to work instead...

Re: Gas Price Increase
Theres another part the place we get a good chunk of our oil from is in a state of fluctuating control.
oil has allready dropped a bit and so is gas here anyways we dropped 2-3 cents in as many days.
besideds the brake problems and possably still pulley and belt alignment issues on my bump, this is the reason i drive the 18.5-25 mpg depending on foot pressure and other conditions 89 cougar. she can go a ways on 1 gal.
I beleive that when your not using it for work reasons, a truck should be ran enough to keep it from breaking, but not as a daily, not even the 20-22 mpg ones they have now. Right tool for the right job, to and from work npo heavy hualing, get a comuter or econo box, light-heavy hauling get the right weight truck.
