1970 F350 tow truck

Post by danbirtch »

I just finished a brake job on my 1970 F350 tow truck dually. I have added a little bit larger tire and have spaced the wheels . I coined and pinned the spacer so that everything lings up. It looks great however I want to add longer wheel studs. does anyone know what the knurl is on the wheel studs . it looks like i can order some 3" studs from jegs but I want to get the knurl right.... I can go larger but it would save me some time in placing the order if someone know what the orginal knurl was.

some who may know might include members basketcase flatbedford and averagef250. i have no idea. i end up at the parts store to get this kind of stuff. larger truck items would be a napa store type of item probably. since napa carries more larger truck items. if it didnt fit right i would take them back. and or i would take and original piece with me.

Sorry I didn't see this before, been pretty pre-occupied lately.
I've got a caliper and a few spare studs, I'll measure the knurl when i get home from work this afternoon.
I do remember getting my new studs a few years back from a NAPA store a believe?

Real glad I had a few studs here inside, (raining out).
The diameter where the knurl is 0.61" on our 9/16" F-350 wheel studs.
I remember having a lot of issues with getting the right spacers I needed for BC # 16. I used the spacers to enable adding the 5K air bags i put on the truck. It seemed there are a lot of unscrupulous sellers who won't post all the dimensions of the spacer, (yet they will list our trucks in an application chart)? :hmm:
Make sure you don't try to drive the stud into the drum alone, (has to drive through the hub assembly/then through the drum on our DRW trucks). Did-it/done-it/got the t-shirt so to speak! :hw:

Don't have any from axles that old, but do have a replacement stud set for the 76 Dana 70 under my '70. The diamter of the knurling is .6255
the shank diameter (non knurled area) is .6015
the diamter that fits in the brake drum is .6450
These studs are 2.75" from under the head to end of threads with 1.6" threaded 9/16-18
They are part number 228, probably a dorman number.

I looked up your application on autostars online system and it gave me many different wheel studs to choose from, most were 1/2-20 thread. I would pull a stud and measure it before ordering to be safe.

I checked the lug nuts again and yes it appears mine are 1/2" 20. So I am probably going to have to pull at least one of them and check it because I have no idea if they have ever been modified. As I have read in some previous posts that the one side should have been left hand threaded and none of them are. Considering its a tow truck and has been its whole life around a garage of some sort the safe bet will be for me to pull em this weekend measure twice and order once. LOL...... I will check napa before I go to jegs but heck if I had used the regular sized tires this point would be moot. But I just had to put them big wide BG Goodrich tires on the back because it looks so cool ! Thanks for the help folks. I will get some pictures of it up here ASAP.

That sounds about right. Here is a 1-1/16 lug nut for our DRW trucks.
Image
If the hole is 1/2" That would leave 9/16" divided by 2, 9/32", or just over 1/4" on either side of the hole.

I don't know the diameter or length of the studs. When I replaced a few, I brought one with me to my parts guy and matched them up.

Dorman 610-228 for the wheel studs.
