Much as this site keep my mind from dwelling on the insanity around me, my trucks, cars, boats and other toys keep me occupied. I know folks who work and then just sit around the house when they are off and I know folks who travel all the time, always planning the next trip...

My toys are my therapy.

I paid 1000 for a '96 exploder that I tooled around in for awhile before givin' it to my brother. Mom put a 1000 into it so it would pass PA inspection, but now it needs a new 4R55e tranny. 3000 at Ford, but I just don't want to work on it and take time away from my old iron. Only time I'm sad about throwin' money away on a truck.

About 5 years ago i tallied up the $$$$$$$$$$$ i'd thrown at my ol' pig - over $35000 (mostly on shiny big name crap that either didn't work even if it somehow fit ,or caused more problems than i started with, and junkyard parts that failed almost immediately after installation) ...if it was a dark and rainy night and the buyer was suffering from poor vision i could probably get $1200 for the truck(maybe)..- which was a little disheartening until i reminded myself that this was over a period of 15yrs .$2300 a year ain't too bad.......yeah,i'm still trying to convince myself that it was a good investment (just kidding, money's no object - i love my ol' pig)
- still got my first first car 20+yrs later : 69 f100 sorta kinda pretending its a Mercury M100 w/a 70 f350 sport custom cab (factory buckets) 67 grille with 69 ranger cooneyes 68 merc box and hood, some supercool fiberglass fenders i scored way back when, 76 f150 disc brake frontend..currently running a 90 5.0HO 4bbl/c4 auto & 3.50 posi...originally a 360/c6 f100 Ranger with dealer added towpack (incl. kelsey hays trailer brake),boxside toolbox, behind the seat stowage & belly tank...only original parts left on 'er are the frame, rear end, rear springs, and rear bumper...

I'd have no problem putting $700 into a solid bump. The bump you have in the picture looks very good by rust-belt standards!!!

In total I've spent less than $5000 on my truck, and it's been worth every penny. It's an Arizona truck so it has no rust; it came with a rebuilt motor, I put on a new carb, manifold, tires and brakes. It can tow/haul anything a new truck can, while looking, sounding, and smelling way more awesome. I'm probably going to sink a few dollars into a new wiring harness and getting it painted and a bed liner sprayed in. When it's done it will be half the cost of a new F150 today, which is getting pretty close to $30k. No regrets here! I'll just keep putting parts in the old girl for as long as I can, I'm hoping to get another 39 years out of her!

I have a buddy who has sunk thousands more on his bumpside-era Chevy and he doesn't have anything that runs.

i think you have a sharp looking bump there. You said it all when you said that you think it is perfect! If you love it, put in the money and enjoy it. With a bump you only have to make "payments" once in a while, not every month!

Things are always darkest before the dawn. If you want something else, get something else. If you wanna keep your old truck, fix it again and drive it again. It sounds like you do a lot of the work yourself - so do I. And there is a lot of satisfaction and peace of mind to be found not only in a job well done, but also in knowing you can diagnose and fix the next problem that comes along. Just keep fixing it right and you'll get more bang for your buck.

But it's up to you.

Well, the old c4 with the cracked bellhousing is on the floor. The new transmission is up in place. I just have to connect the speedometer, kickdown, and driveshaft and we'll be bumping again. Took me two short nights to swap. If Ford didn't use that stupid front crossmember I could do it even faster, those 4 bolts through the frame are tough without a helper! I'm getting pretty good at this. Practice makes perfect :D

I have to admit that I have way too many toys....all cost money to tinker with, however they keep me occupied and they are my stress relievers. I love those toys and in the big scope of things, they all cost less than buying brand new toys and my wife understands my need to "tinker" and relieve stress. Working on my toys is very therapeutic for me. I could throw money away on vices such as alcohol, gamblin, chasing wimen and it's not like I'm spending the mortgage. So yeah, it can be costly but I love these toys, plus my son works on them with me so it's all worth it. By the way, I think your bump looks great!

One of the Kids I help with his jeep has a quote painted inside his Jeep that says "Built not Bought".His is not the nicest jeep in town, but it is one of the more capable
ones. He is VERY proud of his Jeep and the scars he got building it. And yes I use protection so as not to catch that "Jeep Thing"
