is your crossmember bolted in at the top of the frame?????

Post by Whateverman »

i was crawling around under my ride the other day and was trying to recall if ANY of the 10 or so bumps i've owned had the bolts that go thru the top of the frame rail and into the radius arm crossmember attached :hmm:
i know for certain that neither of the 69 f100's i've owned (including my ol' #1) nor the 68 merc m100 did ....

:? how bout your rides? :?
- still got my first first car 20+yrs later : 69 f100 sorta kinda pretending its a Mercury M100 w/a 70 f350 sport custom cab (factory buckets) 67 grille with 69 ranger cooneyes 68 merc box and hood, some supercool fiberglass fenders i scored way back when, 76 f150 disc brake frontend..currently running a 90 5.0HO 4bbl/c4 auto & 3.50 posi...originally a 360/c6 f100 Ranger with dealer added towpack (incl. kelsey hays trailer brake),boxside toolbox, behind the seat stowage & belly tank...only original parts left on 'er are the frame, rear end, rear springs, and rear bumper...

The frame for my 71 f100 has bolts with the nuts on top of the framerail, but rivets everywhere else. the frame on the 69 has bolts that go down through the top of the frame rail, and the crossmember is also bolted to the radius arm brackets. I have no idea about my old 68 (sold it) or my 72 (its raining and cold outside, and i dont feel like crawling around on the wet ground.)

Mine is a 67. The crossmember that bolts to the radius arm mount has four bolts per side. Two go through from the top of the frame rail.

Far as I know the bumps with the bolts on the transmission cross-member and the radius arms are the ones with an automatic transmission from the factory. You almost have to remove that cross=member to pull the automatic transmission.
Mine came with a 302 and manual tranny and had rivets. Had a 72 F250 with a 390/c6 and it had bolts. Worked on many with C-4's and or C6's and they all had bolts and tall tranny covers. Hope this helps

My truck was a t-85 swapped to auto. Due to the small hump I did have to unbolt the c member and push it forward to change trans.

Interesting,thanx guys
-this is all of course just for curiousities sake-i've put over 300k on my #1 bump without any bolts in the top there (on top of the 130k she had when i got 'er) and never had any issues so i'm not about to mess with it,its just a question that has nagged me for years

rivets in manual trans trucks? wow. glad i never attempted a windsor transplant into one of those :D ..the 3 trucks I mentioned all were originally 360/c6 trucks that i swapped over to 351w' or 302's with assorted trannys .

i had to totally remove the radius arm crossmember in order to yank and replace the engines & trannys as a unit ,lemme tell ya its a bit of a fight to get that sucker back into place after everythings said and done...
