1971 F350 4x4??

Post by LIVEWIRE »

Found a 1971 single wheel 4x4 that the guy SWEARS it is a 1 ton LWB. Not a 250, a 350. Is this possible? I'm not very 'up' on the 4x4 bumps. It seems to be in good shape and at a good price, but it is 4 hours away and I haven't seen any pics. Thanks for any help.

Napco and others converted F350 2wd bumps to 4x4. They are neat, but not much of a 4x4 compared to a 250 4x4.

Odds are pretty good it's a F250 4x4. The VIN will start with F26 if it's an F250 4x4. A 2wd F350 will be F35, there was never a 4x4 F350 from the factory until 1979 and that was the exact same truck as a 250 with a higher GVW plate.

There were F350 4X4's from the factory before 79 AND they are not the same truck as an F250. There are 78's and possibly 77.5's. They do have the same frame but have a Dana 60 up front standard where the F250 has a Dana 44 up front standard. They have other differences as well which is why they are so much money compared to a F250. Hawkrod

You know your stuff so I'll take your word for it. I've seen dozens of 77.5-78 F-250 4x4's with 60 front ends, but they were F-250's. F26XXXXXX VIN . Seen just as many 79 F-350 4x4's, exact same truck, no difference whatsoever. Dana 60 rear axle, 1/2" wheel studs, but had F36XXXXXXXX VIN. Never seen nor heard of an F-350 4x4 built prior to 1979.

I've been around several governmaent/fleet ordered 60's and 70's crew and std cab F250 4x4's that came with closed knuckle 60 front ends. These were high GVW 250's, but got the 60 somehow.

The Dana 60 was an upgrade option on many F250 4X4's but was standard on the F350. I have not seen too many 78 F350 4X4's but they are listed in the sales books and I have touched a couple of them. The later trucks are easy to ID because the door tag has the model year on it! I will wager that many people see the grille and assume it is a 79 but 78's had the same grille. Hawkrod

I think 78 had the round headlights and 79 had square.
