Way off topic what price to ask for my cannon?

Post by eggman918 »

Last year when funds were low and stress was high I built a .50 cal. breach loading black powder cannon
it fires direct and indirect a lot of fun when camping .I am going to sell it at a local gun shop and have no idea what price to ask
help me put a price tag on it the Beast needs the funds.

Neat cannon. Hard question to answer though. How many hours and how much money do you have in it? Start high and feel them out is about all you can do.

Well that is a hard one. I am a wood worker have been for 48 years. When I make something for someone that wants to buy it. I consider it a labor of love because I can never get out of it what my labor is worth. I just consider what the material cost and then I double that for my price. I don't often take on woodworking projects anymore unless it is for family, or a close friend. Good luck. I hope you at least can get double what you have in it material wise.

I think the biggest question is 'Is it legal?' What's the FFL regs on a home made minature cannon? Safeties, loading limits etc? Documentation?

Just wondering.

Thanks for the input guys,as far as I know black powder is not regulated other than you must be 18 years of age. the barrel is 4130 steel ,with a chamber wall thickness
of 1/2" I have proofed it with 100 grains of fffg and a 300 grain maxi ball and it shot 24" of flame and moved the cannon 8". I do not think it is possible to blow it up.
Any muzzle loading firearm is subject to operator error by the very nature of the system.the time involved in construction was about a month but was therapeutic
I built it when my daughter was going through a divorce and I needed to concentrate on ANYTHING but that and the material was remnants bound for the scrap yard.
Now that I have built it and fired it a few times it is time to let it go,maybe I should wait for the next gun show and feel out the market :hmm:
I make knives ,axes and other edged weapons for fun but have yet to make any money at it I end up giving them to friends it is hard to compete
with shiny crap from china until you have made a reputation.
Thank's again
Steve.

Hey Steve, I'd call around different shops or even stop in next time you are looking for powder and talk to them, should be educational and they might know a buyer right away.

Just got my reminder for the friends of the NRA banquet and I had a thought, they raffle/auction off many guns/gear each year I'll contact them and donate it
free advertising and a tax deduction plus it would be an educated group far less likely to misuse it.What do you think??

It is black powder. FFL regs have nothing whatsoever to do with it.
