Decoding Fastener Part Numbers

Gentlemen I'm confused. I have been looking up fasteners in my parts book for my 68 F100. I know about AMK Products Inc.. They do not have all the Ford fastener part numbers noted in their catalog. If I could decode the part number myself I could find the fastener a lot faster. Here is an example. Part number: 45534-S8 (Grade 2 Hex Bolt, 3/8-16, 9/15 across flats, 1.00" Threaded, 3.00" Long, Medium Silver Zinc Plate) I know that S8 is the finish. This example comes from "How to Read FoMoCo Part Numbers" website. I know the finish part. My question is how does the 45534 brake down into everything else? Thanks guys for your help in advance.

The numbers sounds like a generic hardware number. Does it match anything in the master parts catalog or a part breakdown image?

Hi Jamie,

Thanks for the reply. That example part number I cannot locate. But it must attach something to something. There is a gap in the numbers. It goes from 45399 to 45600 and the 45534 is in about the middle of that gap. I do know that some of the fastener numbers that are listed in the FoMoCo Part Numbers book are broke down. Example. 378178-S breaks down like this, Screw and washer assembly, 5/16-18 thread x 1.00" long, Standard finish. AMK Products catalog shows the same break down along with their own part number to order by. Part Numbers like 40962-S, 380104-S, 372158-S are only shown in the part breakdown illustration image and not shown in the main Master Part Number Book. So all you have is a number without a description. I know they are fasteners and they have a standard finish and where they go and that is all. Nobody has any fasteners listed by these numbers. Without a description, you cannot locate a supplier or order plain and simple. So I guess we just keep on looking. It just maybe a generic hardware number like you said. I guess time will tell. where do they go? i dont know bolts by part numbers only by sight.

Ironic but it looks like some of the aftermarket vendors use the Ford MPC numbers... I need to double check but I need a pack or two of these to put my front clip together again. Had to torch it apart...
