67 Shortbed project Begining 4-2011
Hello everyone, I've decided to add my new project to the forums in hopes of getting lots of help and good info. I also hope this may help someone else as well. Here is what i'm starting with.
It's a 1967 short wheelbase custom cab with the 352/3 spd tranny painted in harbor blue originally.
The interior was bench seat in medium blue petticrush
As you can see it is a long ways from what it was originally. The truck is very rough, but I'm going to go ahead with the project anyways.
This is gonna be alot of work but i intend on doing as much of it as i possibly can..
I am shooting for a 67 shelby 500GT inspired bump with a cummins 4bt powerplant. The truck will be lowered with the door handles, rain gutters, big mirrors and other details removed. It will be painted back to the harbor blue with white shelby racing stripes, scoop and badges. it will also sport a tilt front end and a full wood bed with a bed color/stripe matched bed tonnou cover. The interior will be matching blue and white bench seat finished in pony trim with custom white faced guages replacing the originals.
Right now i guess its time to start the teardown and stockpiling of parts. I need to find a 4bt. from what ive read the best bet for this truck is the mid 80's grumman box truck with the standard shift but i'm not certian of this. I have spent alot of time reading here and on the 4btswap site but i'm still not sure what all is involved in this swap. any input would be greatly appreciated!!!

Re: 67 Shortbed project Begining 4-2011
Hello everyone. It has been a up and down kinda week for me on the bump project. Got started probing the body for bondo and found very little that wasn't bondo. I knew there would be a bit of it but the lengths someone went to to hide the over abundance of rust is staggering!!! The entire roof is held on by what id bet to be 15 lbs of bondo. the fornt of the hood is eat completly out, and event the floorboards were bondo'd in place and painted over. whoever did this took more time doing nice work on body putty than it would have taken to replace/repair the panels to begin with.
.
Well needless to say my outlook became very bad as i continued my investigative work on the cab. The final tally for the cab work... an entire rebuild of the roof, the windshield channel, all floor panels must be replaced, both cab corners, front and rear, inner kick panels both sides, rotted and bondo'd, basically the entire cab is shot. the doors are gone inner and outer. boy i will never look at a truck with out a magnate again, and then its still only an indicator and doesn't tell you just how bad it can be.
So after discusing with the little lady, we went looking for a cab. Made it to a junkyard that i knew might have some old trucks sitting around walk into the garage, petted the old dog laying right in the middle of the doorway. (he just kinda looked up at me with glazed over eyes and let me climb over him) and bellied up to the bar counter with all the broken pistons turned into ashtrays sitting all around and said hello.
I told the guy what i was looking for and he said he had a truck out there that he would part with if the money was right. (here we go i thought). We walked out back down this asle and around that old logging truck and lookey here sitting down there is a complete blue bump!! Its even got air in the tires!! I spend 2 hours looking it over, probing, checking with my magnate and it's a solid unwrecked truck and it runs!! now it hits me just how much is the right price gonna be??? well as it turns out the guy really loves his chevys and thinks fords are junk!! So $800.00 later i'm on my way to town to get a fuel pump and a 5 gallon can of gas. in 2 hours i'm driving my dirty, smelly, new blue bump home! talk about a high!!! the good lord must be ok with me having my dream truck after all.
What i know about the truck is taht its a 67 or 68 rangerxlt with the 240 six and a 3 speed. the cab has been changed and is a post 69 cab. there is no title which is no problem as my original 67 has the title. and here in georgia if the vehicle is a certian age then a bill of sale acts as the title. I cant be sure of the year on the truck though as it has been pieced together. it does have most of the pieces to the ranger package as i know them to be. the side markers on the truck scream 68. but any help making certian would be awsome.
Well now i have to reformulate a plan of action and exactly how i want to get these two trucks turned into my one dream truck.... i do have some work to plan so its time to get off of here and out there....
ok can someone tell me how to get these pics to show up bigger, they are uploaded to the photo gallery in 640x480 format but wont show up that way here???

Hey, cookmatt67! I looks like you have changed your mind about that 4bt powerplant you originally proposed. Are you still planning the "Shelby" treatment?
Nice snag on that junkyard find, by the way!
keep us posted!

So, are you rebuilding the blue bump or the 67? I have a 67 and just started tearing it down this week. I hope I dont have any suprises like you did, but if I do I hope I have the same fortune looking for a donor truck.

Re: 67 Shortbed project Begining 4-2011
the 67 body is just way too far gone, so the blue body will wind up on the 67 frame. I really thought i messed up with the purchase of the 67 but it really has been nice to have for parts. just remember that the 67 is almost a completly different monster than the 68 and later trucks there are many parts that are different on the 67.

Re: 67 Shortbed project Begining 4-2011
Ok so the tear down is starting for real now, I've got my garage built and here we go, this week i pulled the bumpers, fenders, grill, bed and stripped the interior. bagged and labeled all the lil parts and put them away. also stripped the drivers side fender, replaced a bad spot and welded up all the holes.
now she is in primer and awaiting the rest of the truck.
This week i will mark the front clips position and pull it as well as the doors, glass and hood.
The reason for marking the radiator support is that the front end will be a tilt setup. also ordered my shaved door kit so i can start the door fab work and get those in primer.
I also recovered the seat last week which went alot smoother than i thought it would!!!!
In this pic the cover has a few wrinkles but it was quite cold when i did this and after the temp got up the fabric smoothed right out.
Now that i'm underway with this project i'll update this more often. peace out!!

Re: 67 Shortbed project Begining 4-2011
new update... been alot of work going on on my old bump....
Took the bad all the way to bare metal, welded all the bad spots up and put it in paint.
Same for the doors except all the handles got shaved for remotes.
Pulled the power disc brake/power steering front end off the 77 donor and put it under the 67. also modified the pedals for automatic with the 77 donor parts
Currently getting the tilt front end all worked out
hope to have the front fenders and radiator support in paint by the weekend

Looks great, like the paint combination. How does the front end lock in place in the down position?

Re: 67 Shortbed project Begining 4-2011
hello all, new update on my 67, Got all the rubber and glass in the doors and cab last week. man theses door rubbers are really bugging me (to much gap till they compress and settle in). Got the door poppers in and working well. Got a good bit of front end wiring done. I had to rewire the front harness to be removable at the tilt section. Having a few extra harnesses in the yard made this a much easier job to do...
Also reworked my guage cluster. Painted it to match the truck and used a headlight restoring kit on the plastic view panel. man that made a huge difference!!
I also installed dome white face gauge inserts and painted the needles orange again
While I was in there in went a set of l.e.d. strips to replace the old backlighting...
I also reworked a hood from a 77 dent to fit my 67 bump and IIIIIII Like it!!!!
.
well thats about all for this week so far now im off to work on a hood pull and time to redo the grill and hood to match the truck. peace out
