anniversary car? (off topic)

Post by dolinick »

My wife had been looking at mercedes recently. I might get away with spending a thousand bucks. To get her this for our 1 year anniversary which is May 1st. :D

Any opinions about a 1982 mercedes 240d like this? Is it very expensive to maintain? Reliable? She doesn't want a big v8 and also likes a manual shift car.

I went to look at the car this morning. It looked good and sounded good so I drove it around the block. So I offered him $1000 for the car and he took it. I drove the car down to Floresville which is about 40 miles. I ran good. I did manage to get it over 70 a couple of times but enjoyed driving around 60. And it sure doesn't have any power. It does seem a little dangerous at times because of how slow it is. The interior is in good shape. The body has a few small dents but not too bad. The clear coat and paint is bad on the passenger's side. The previous owner said he bought a wrecked mercedes and used it's interior to replace this car's interior. Shifting into third is kind of tricky and if you stop and keep the clutch on the floor and put the car in neutral then it will grind when putting it back into first. If I put it in 2nd and then 1st it usually won't grind. It is at least going to need transmission work.

I surprised my wife with the car when we were going out shopping this evening. We walked outside and I handed her the key. She thought it was the key to my Ranger and said she couldn't drive the truck. I asked her if she wanted to drive her Mercedes which was parked across the street by our neighbors house. She thought I was playing a trick on her. She didn't believe it was her car at first. She seemed to like it and didn't mind that it was a diesel. She said she liked the way it sounded. That was when it was idling. She said she wants to drive it to work on weekends. So anyway she wasn't comfortable driving so I drove us to target where I took this photo...

Congradulations!

I've had good luck with these guys:

http://www.drivewerks.com/index.htm (same people - the two catalogs don't list the same parts sometimes)

Glad she likes it...

Well I found a '77 and an '82 wrecked/parts cars nearby on craigslist. My transmission guy said he would charge $200 to put in a transmission but didn't want to rebuild mine or give me a quote on parts/labor to fix it. I would like my wife to be able to enjoy her car so I'm rather motivated to get it running right.

The best part of diesel motors is that they don't wear out like gas motors. People run these Mercedes diesels for several hundred thousand miles on original blocks... Good luck with it!
