Things Never Break When Your Home...

Post by ford4x4fun »

I have had my house for about a year and a half now. I have been gone for the last 5 months. During this time, the electrical in the attic tried to burn down the house, one toilet quit working. Some of my lights are blowing bulbs, instantly. One of the drains started leaking, the weed-eater and lawn mower wont start, it is just aggravating. All this stuff could be fixed in a weekend but now the little Ol' Lady is all stressed out and pissy. I just don't understand why things don't break while I am right there to fix them. Oh and the people have been back 3 times to fix the AC.

This is like the car that won't break down close to home. I had this one pile that left me stranded all over the place (this was back before the "hey come and get me" cell phone call could be made). I got so mad at it, I decided I was going to scatter the engine in my driveway (I was a kid, cut me some slack). I got in it, fired it up and held the throttle right to the mat. I eventually got tired of sitting it it, so I grabbed a cinder block, put it on the pedal and walked away. The thing ran wide open for about 30 minutes and then slowly started to drop rpm due to it running such a massive amount of heat. It finally just shut off. An hour later, it fired right up again (a lot of smoke, but it started).

This thing would cough out and die at any given time as long as I was away from home. Or maybe I should have just run it wide open everywhere I went.

Cars or trucks always runs great when you take it to the Mechanic. Not that I ever do. I try and do my own work on my cars and trucks and the house. My dad once told me you either spend money on car payments or you spend money fixing them yourself. It is up to you to decide which one you want to do.
I have always been the type to do it myself. Bought a house built in 53 about 20 some years ago and have had to learn how to do the work myself. I ended up adding a bathroom and rebuilding the [censored] including cabinets and counter tops. They wanted 5k 15 years ago to replace the [censored] and I decided to learn how to build cabinets myself.
It is always tough being on the road when things are going haywire at home. I sure know that feeling. I was in a motel working 7-12's 150 miles from home when the hotel owner comes to my room telling me my wife had called (small motel) and that my daughter was in the hospital. I tried to call home or my parents house for 30 minutes and then called the supervisor of the job telling him I had to hit the road. My wife called while I was packing wanting to know what was wrong. Daughter was fine. I was lead man on a big Generator job so I figured I made somebody mad at me and they placed the call. Never found out who but back then I would have laid him out. Back then I could have done it. lol Not A thing you should do because you don't like the lead man.
Go home when you can and fix what you can. If you have problems ask us on here, lot's of us work on our own stuff and can help you

Out of the 24 years in the Navy, I was away at least 14 years or more, when all the away times are added up. It is rough when stuff goes down when you are deployed. If Vicki and me lived closer I would offer to fix the breaks for you two. Service members should look out for each other and the family members.

:yt: I agree 100%. I was Air Force so had a 3:30 to 4:pm type job making sure the runway lights worked. Almost a normal job. I was a Powelineman but worked the runway. GREAT job. Saw every Jet the A.F. had at the time plus every other branch of the services.
Are there any friends around that you can depend on while you are away? Maybe a club of people in your line of work so they have something on common with you and your wife?
