Prindle?

Post by sargentrs »

Friend at work and I were shooting the breeze about various cars/trucks/hot rods we've owned and he started telling me a story about troubleshooting and he bumped the prindle and the car started rolling. I got a confused look on my face and, hesitating to show my ignorance, asked him what a prindle was. He said, you know, prindle....

Long ago as a young lad observing from the back seat I used to wonder why the selector on the A/C and HEAT was labled "COOL OFF HEAT" What's "cool off heat" anyway? I also wondered why the fan switch was labled Maxfanoff :hmm:

I had a '57 Buick Special in high school waaaay back in '69. :help: 364 - 4 barrel 4 door hardtop. :D Huge car, anyway it had a Dynaflow automatic that read P-N-D-S-L-R. I guess ol' Harvey Earl was the guy that "penciled" this one out. The "S" was for "super" that when selected was supposed to give a "super highlighted" driving experience. :hmm: Well, with eight of us kids in the car, c/w with beer, sitting side by side and not even touching our backsides, all "S" did was give a good speed to drag around town. :hd:

In the early 60s I had a 59 chevy with a 348 and the selector read p-r-n-d-Gr. No kidding, I
was told
that it stood for GRADE and it was a car that was intended for use in a mountian area. I was living in so ga. and bought it in so ga.

That is so cool having a Gr on the selector. I have never seen one. Was it the same two speed that GM bolted up to their 409 that would do about 100 MPH in first gear? It sure got your attention when it went into high though. The FMX in my Edsel is P-R-N-D2-D1-L. In D2 it starts out in second then shifts to high. In D1 it goes through all 3 gears. But with the 2:69 rears it just about needs that first gear to start out. But out on the highway at 65-70 MPH it is a very nice running car.

hey thanks for that info , but as for doing 100mph naw it was closer to about 35 and when you shifted it would clean all the dirt from the underside and rip the arm that went from diff to the frame a loose from the frame I know it took a come-a-long and a buzz box to fix it.But I was almost right.
