texas inspection requirements and sugestions...

Post by JG F100 »

Hi Guys,

I've finally got plates and registration on the truck (woohoo! :)) but now need an inspection sticker. All the lights, signals, horn, etc work except the reverse lights, do they check those? My main concern is over the air cleaner. Is it easier or less hassle to run an open element air filter or the original closed air cleaner. I've got the original thermostatic one but don't have the heat riser, valve or any of the choke tubes. This is a stock 360 2bbl with stock manifolds, 1972 F100 in Harris county.

This is what the DPS site it states...

The exhaust emission system was installed by manufacturers of motor vehicles beginning with model year 1968. The inspection of the exhaust emission system will apply only to those vehicles that are equipped with such a system. The following exhaust emission systems will be inspected if installed as original equipment by the manufacturer: thermostatic air cleaner, exhaust gas recirculation system, positive crankcase ventilation system, air injection system, evaporative emission system, and/or catalytic converter.

BTW i'm in far north west Houston in Cypress if you know of a "friendly" inspection place.

Thanks

I don't think you will have much of a problem. I've never had anyone look under the hood in my truck. They just checked the lights, brakes and horn.

I agree. You shouldn't have a problem with anyone looking under your hood. I never have. You will have to have reverse lights for sure, but I always get into trouble for not having a license plate light.

If get antique tags, you wont have an inspection sticker to mess with anymore, wont have to run a front plate or have the tag on the windshield :D .
I went that rout but i dont drive mine to much.

I know several "friendly " inspectors if you want to drive 250 miles to get it. All they look at around here is mainly lights and insurance on mine. I don't think he even looked at the lights last time.

well it passed! but barely, the horn decided not to work, had to wiggle it, must be a flaky ground and the turn signals decided two flashes was enough, lol. It was funny, the guy didnt know how to set the parking brake but otherwise they were all cool checking out the truck.

One of the guys did say I should have the choke tube coming up from the exhaust manifold but then he said, I'll leave that up to our inspector.

Didn't know how to set the parking brake? It seems pretty obvious.

I would understand if he didn't know how to dim the headlights or work the column shift.

I should have said he couldn't release it. the other guys laughed and said you needed to be as old as the truck to know :)

I took mine to get inspected and the 20-something attendant looked at the column and said, "Is that a manual shifter?"

"Yes. Three-on-the-tree."

"Um, you'll have to pull that into the bay. I don't know how to drive one of those."

JG, What wheels are you running? Those are about as perfect a look as I've seen.
