scrap copper radiators - scrap value?
I'm going to sell a couple copper v8 bumpside radiators today as scrap. Does anyone know what the fair price is nowadays?
Thanks ahead of time!

Really good money right now, $30-50 each. I'd hold on to them though, with the economy tanking and the wars still going strong scrap is going to rise a good bit more.

Ya... I wanted to hold on to them longer, but I only got 6 bucks left in my checking account. Those dudes gotta go today at lunch. I'm just glad I had them laying around.
I had an old car battery laying around say I loaded it up to. Do scrap places even buy them for lead anymore?

Call your local battery warehouse, they were up to $8 each last year, not sure about now.

take off the steel from the radiators before you scrap them. they pay more without the steel on them.. dont forget the drain valve. batterys are good money too.

copper brass radiators are $1.95 per pound here assuming the steel is knocked off. most yards will buy batteries, usually anywhere from .15 to .30 per pound, just varies on the yard

Re: scrap copper radiators - scrap value?
When you take in stuff like say a power steering gear do you have to try and drain any fluids out of it? Will they pay you for cast iron or what for something like that? Been looking around a bit more today and I bet it wouldn't be real hard to gather up 1200 pounds of scrap around here. Probably mostly cast iron or steel. About 4 batteries. Wonder if that would bring in more than $100?

Re: scrap copper radiators - scrap value?
a power steering gear would be auto cast.if the gear box is cast iron. and if it still had the gears in it. it would be called dirty. because it would have steel and cast mixed together. copper brass radiators are going for 1.35 a pound here. if they are clean. i sold a bunch of stuff today i got 148.00 for everything i had.

Re: scrap copper radiators - scrap value?
SO, stuff like manual trannies and steering gears should be taken apart and cleaned to get the most money for them? When you say DIRTY are you calling it that because it is mixed metals or because of the oils and greases?
When you carry the stuff there I guess you have the metals all segregated as to what kind of metals it is? I figured you drove over a scale coming and going and they weighed what you had and paid you accordingly. Guess that is wrong.
Thanks for the help. I need the money to fix a Ford LGT12H garden tractor and my dad's wrecked 93 F150 supercab he gave me after it was totaled.

dirty = mixed
each place is different. i have mt stuff loaded in piles or places in the bed when i go there. i throw out all of the shred first. car bodies plain steel so forth. well after i weigh in. then i weigh out. i then go to the next building. which weighs my piles of separated metals aluminum copper cast iron brass radiators a batteries. catalytic converters. then i go to get paid.

Re: scrap copper radiators - scrap value?
Clean metals, particularly non ferrous metals, always pay more even when scrap is down. Clean refers to all metals seperated. They pay more because they get more when they resell it. Yards will dock ( deduct ) for heavy dirt, garbage, ice and other things that have no value. You don't have to pressure wash the stuff but you shouldn't have big clumps of mud on it either. Some folks try to cheat the yards but it's never a good idea. Most of them have seen all of the common tricks and some pretty ingenius uncommon ones. Yes you should drain as much of the fluids as possible. Yes 1200 lbs of any metal should bring in excess of $100. As of yesterday tin ( appliances, automotive sheet metal, filing cabinets, ect. ) was paying $11 per hundred pounds at the yard that is my 2nd job. Tin is normally the lowest point in the value scale and everything else goes up from there.cdeal28078 wrote:SO, stuff like manual trannies and steering gears should be taken apart and cleaned to get the most money for them?
