What made you buy a bump?

Post by Hemp8709 »

The day i got my bump, I was actually going to buy a 65 CHEVY (yes , yes I know). When i got there to pick it up, the guy sold half of it for parts!! (maybe it was meant to be!) As I was leaving he yelled "hey, I got a few truck in back. you wanna talk a look?" I was like " are they like the one I came for?" He said "npo, theirs a few old Fords back there." I was like "hmm, guess it couldn't hurt" So i looked and the only one that was complete was a 1969 F100 with a 360 c6 tranny. Fell in love at first sight! Paid $1000 with a 1980 Honda (with title in the bake of the bed). Since the day i got her, I have been with her every minute! Brainstorming whats the next part to put on her, color, etc etc. So there you have it, must of been meant to be. :D

 I was wanting a 51-52 ford truck as I love the fenders and the big grill they have but wasn't having any luck finding one that someone didn't think they were worth a gold watch! Came across an add for a 69 shorty and thought that might be cool and wanted a short bed to make a hotrod out of so went for a look, he had it for $800 and I got it for $600 and drove it home. It needs work and had to park it after a couple of years as with a couple burnt valves I could no longer get it to pass emissions :( collected a bunch of parts for it and even have a new motor for it ready to go just haven't gotten to work on it yet. Then got the bug and bought a 69 Highboy that is a runner and is usable but also needs some work, got some new parts for it and try to work on it when I can but it does get driven at least once in a while. :) I have too many projects...

In 1991 My wife and I traded off our 86 F150 4X4 for a new toyota 4runner. At the time, we were living in Montana. It was early spring IIRC and I just happened to mention to my wife that it was going to be tough to get an elk in the 4 runner. She let me know that in no certain terms that elk and deer were off limits either inside or strapped ontop of HER new ride. Being the opportunistic kniving person that I am, I used this to my benefit and started looking for a hunting truck. I found a 1971 F250 4X4 a couple of months later. The guy wanted $1500 for it. My wife was pretty hesitant about letting me spend the money. So I again mentioned how nice a 6X6 elk would look inside the back of the 4runner and that I probably wouldn't scratch the paint up too badly while hunting. Drove the truck home an hour later! :D

Back in the mid to late 1960's, I was a Chevy guy. My "awakening" happened in the form of off-road racing. After watching the Stroppe Ford team winning constantly, I quickly learned that Fords were superior to Chevys in all respects.

I bought a used '67 F100 SWB, 2WD, Flare Side with an FE/Cruise-o-matic combo in 1969 and never looked back.

That Truck got the crap beat out of it pre-running the deserts of SoCal, Nevada, Arizona and Mexico and it never whimpered.. it got my instant respect and admiration as all Bumps still do to this day.

I've had quite a few Bumps over the years and Loved every one of them. My involvement with off road racing ended many years ago but my Love for Bumps lives on...

My Dad used to drive a 69 F100 everyday. When I turned 16 he showed up from work one day in a 67 F100. I asked him why he was driving that and he tole me he had thought I would like to have it. I got excited then! Twenty years later and I still get excited when I see a bump.

I was 18 & finally had abit of money saved up from my crappy job so i could get my own wheels and give my mother her datsun 510 back.
I tried getting a loan on a 78 gmc shortbox 4by (which was a total p.o.s. looking back now) and got turned down,so i started checkin out the local buy&sell paper hoping to find a 66 ford or merc truck like the one my dad had when i was a kid...no dice.
A month later there was a "69 f100 ranger for sale 360 v8 auto 120000mi good for restoration"($1500)...wasn't a 66,but it was the same body style as my uncles old 71 f350 shorty ( which had a seriously punched up 390 & would get 4th (!) gear rubber!!) so i went for it
- it was totally rust free, the interior was mint and the engine ran perfect- but it had been painted with a brush using house paint...
being an 18yr old moron i got ripped off $1500 - didn't even test drive it and found out on the way down the monster hill from the guys house that it needed brakes...
almost 20 years later,i still have that old pig sitting in my driveway
- still got my first first car 20+yrs later : 69 f100 sorta kinda pretending its a Mercury M100 w/a 70 f350 sport custom cab (factory buckets) 67 grille with 69 ranger cooneyes 68 merc box and hood, some supercool fiberglass fenders i scored way back when, 76 f150 disc brake frontend..currently running a 90 5.0HO 4bbl/c4 auto & 3.50 posi...originally a 360/c6 f100 Ranger with dealer added towpack (incl. kelsey hays trailer brake),boxside toolbox, behind the seat stowage & belly tank...only original parts left on 'er are the frame, rear end, rear springs, and rear bumper...

Had the opportunity to purchase one through an estate sale close to the first vehicle
I was allowed to drive by myself, After 25 years in dealerships I came to appreciate
a real truck with no PS,PB or A/C and with a hook.

Every time I look at it the memory train starts rolling and the satisfaction of
having the ability to repair anything that comes up is an excellent feeling 8)

I've never bought a bump. Had 3 of them given to me over the years, though.

First one was my dads, he left it to me when he died. Still have it today.

Second one was a "gift" just for hauling it out of the guys weeds (what he called a back yard, looked more like the Amazon Basin with all the undergrowth). Pulled a few parts off it and made a trailer of the rest. Sold that.

Third was a co-workers. He had just put together a new engine for it (300-I6) about 6 months after putting a new transmission in. 3 months before that he had replaced the rear end. Now the electrical was fried and he didn't want anything to do with it, so I took it off his hands. Smelled the burnt wiring in the cab, sure enough it was a ball of twisted black crap up under the dash. Parted out most of the truck for some really good cash (had receipts for the all the powertrain work) and made another trailer. Sold that too.

Only Ford trucks I've ever bought were dents.

Had a '94 Honda Accord. 250,000+ miles on it and little stuff started going bad. Fuel pump went out - $125 then had to pay $75 to install. Then the fuel pump relay switch went bad and that was $82 for a little plastic box! Never had a clutch put in it, never had a timing belt change. It was a time bomb waiting to explode. I was driving home in it one day and saw my truck in front of a shop with a For Sale sign on it, $1500. THAT I understood and could work on. I pulled in and asked if he would swap even. He agreed, we threw keys and I've never been happier. That was 7 years ago. Learned to drive at the age of 10 in my grandpa's '69 Custom. It was Boxwood Green with a white top (Wimbledon?)and 3 on the tree. He'd let me and my brother (11 years old) take it down the old dirt roads to the lake when we stayed there on summer vacation. When I saw my truck the nostalgia was so thick you could taste it. Good times and great memories!

In 1990 I owned a '67 cougar 289 with A/C,a new guy started at our shop and he was driving a '68 high boy 360 4 speed with a 8' flat bed made out of 1/4" diamond plate
and I was in love at first sight. the truck was completely wore out,it had been a ranch truck since new and lived in 4x4.I had wanted one since I was about 10 and He
had always wanted a cougar so we traded the next day.He was worried that he was taking advantage of me and I was thinking that I was doing the same to him
I guess that it was a "win, win" for both of us.I have sense lost contact with him however I will drive my bump till the kids or cops take my keys away :D

My uncle had 2 of them that he would let me drive on his farm when I was around 10. When I was 16, I spied a '68 in the paper and went to see it. It had been painted nicely, the interior done, wheels & tires, tint. It was just a really nice truck. My dad and I looked all over town that day and decided it was the one to have. I had to sell my dad my '69 Charger project that was half finished to buy it. Luckily, he held onto it for me until I was able to buy it back. I sold the '68 shortly after I got married because it was sensible and kicked myself ever since. I was fortunate enough to get it back after 10 years. It's beat to snot, but someday it will return to its former glory.

I remember my father buying a brand new 73 highboy when I was a kid and we went everywhere in that thing. He sold it about 10 years later but that truck had a lasting impression on me. Last year, I decided that I better start looking for a replacement truck for my 98 Dodge Ram as I am giving it to my daughter next year when she turns 16. I figured if I got something then, I would have 2 years to turn it into my "daily" truck. I started looking for a 73 for sentimental reasons but quickly realized that I loved the bumpsides much more than the dentsides.

I would have loved to find a highboy or crew cab, but when I found my 72 F250, it spoke to me and I ended up getting it for a decent price. Still a work in progress, but it runs strong and has a straight body with no rust. Now the kid is about 8 months away from getting the Dodge (which just sits now, waiting for her) and the Ford is my go to truck anytime I need her. Im hooked on the bump and have lots of plans for her in the future.
