(I know, too late now)...Here's an idea for people in the future, I have number and letter stamps. A few stamped numbers or letters on an item let's you know it's yours.

I do that with anything I send to a machine shop or a trans rebuilder.

Was the shaft that rusty? When I pulled the pitman arm off of mine the splines were still shiney. Thats after 40+ years.

I must say...I have looked at the pic pretty close and something seems a bit "off" to me. Where is he? If he's close to me, I'll go have a look.

I had something real similiar happen to me. The guys picture showed no crack and he refused to talk on the phone. Ebay just took my money (paypal) and the guy eventually shipped it back. There was nothing wrong with the part (heavy cast iron transfercase adapter), but Ebay sides automatically with the BUYER. I did get all my listing and paypal fees back only after making a big deal about it, threatening legal action, etc.

Those two dont look anything the same. Mounting tabs are different, where the rust is. The rust is a huge telltale, and he's not very bright for a scammer.

Ask for another picture of the whole box, and to pay shipping to send you the box back. Do NOT refund the price yet.

One more thing. Do ALL FUTURE correspondence (sp?) through ebays dispute system. If he gets ANY bit stinky, about going through the dispute system or that you are disputing his claim at all, point out the differences in those two pictures. If ebay gets any bit stinky about supporting YOUR claim, threaten legal action, as even a ten year old can see there is a difference there, and a small-claims judge will most definitely be able to see the difference. Make sure you point this out in your correspondence, as pointing out the proof that someone is a scammer (without directly saying they are one) is usually enough to get them to back off.

Between ebay not supporting sellers, and now they are increasing fees for sellers AGAIN, I am done with buying/selling on ebay. If I cant find it locally, or on the forums I hang out on, I don't need it.

Yeah, I was a big ebay seller for a while, but I got very tired of feeling beaten up all the time for using their service. I agree, it does not look like the same box. Also, I cannot imagine you not seeing that crack. So, it seems very funky to me on his end.

Alright, so, I blew up both pictures and looked them over. I find it a bit odd that the picture of the box he sent you has some old paint where your box has none. I think you need a full picture of the box, showing the box and the crack, from the same angle your box was shot at originally. It's an easy request and if he is on the up and up, he will understand and do it for you. If he gets all huffy, you know you're onto something.

I have sold on Ebay quite a bit. At times I have made mistakes and at other times I feel people are trying to screw me out of a free part. I will usually request pictures and details then refund their money. Having the buyer pay to ship the part back is just going to add to the problem (even though it is there responsibility). If I think the person is trying to take advantage of the situation I simply don't sell to them again. Kind of turn the cheek mentality but it doesn't seem to pay to fight on Ebay or Paypal as the seller. Like what is written above you will either loose, or waste a lot of time. Proving who is right will only hurt you as the seller.

One big thing I thought about this morning on the way to bed was the buyer asked the seller to remove the arm. One side asks why the seller didn't see the cracks and the other side asks why the buyer would ask for the arm to be removed if he was being shady.

Personally I would wait to refund until the part was home and if it's bleeding obvious the part was swapped then too bad but if the dirt on the shaft is undisturbed and the dirt around cover and bolts is ok then the crack was probably there prior. Of course if it's a comletely different box you should be able to tell from the pics and your memory.

Paypal usually sides with the buyer but if you have same angle pics of both parts and the returned part is different they might side with you.

Exactly why I left ebay...along with the increased fees a few years back.

Agreed with getting your box back first-then refund-after confirmation it is in fact your original part!
